By the time we finished eating everyone started banging their cups against the tables. Suddenly the Dauntless leader emerged on the balcony above the cafeteria. "Initiates, stand. You have chosen to join the warrior faction tasked with the defense of this city and all its inhabitants. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery and the courage that drives one person to stand up for others. Respect that. Do us proud." Everyone in the room started cheering and laughing. Some of the old Dauntless members picked me and the other initiates up and passed us around. We all cheered and laughed.
It was now the morning and I woke up to a loud banging. I looked over to see Four at the stairs making the noise. I groaned and pulled my pillow over my face. You would think having been originally in Amity I would be used to getting up early for tending to the fields but it is the total opposite. "I want everyone in The Pit. Two minutes." Then he left. I got dressed and headed to The Pit. Four was standing in the middle waiting for us to arrive. "There are two stages of training. The first is physical. Push your bodies to the breaking point and you'll master the methods of combat. The second is mental. Again, breaking point. You'll face your worst fears and conquer them unless they get you first. You'll be trained separately from the Dauntless-born, but you'll be ranked together. After initiations, rankings will determine what jobs you move into. Leadership, guarding the fence, or keeping the Factionless from killing each other." Eric came up from some where behind Four. "The rankings will also determine who gets cut." I wasn't that scared of being cut but the mental part of training did if they found out I was Divergent they would most likely kill me. "At the end of each stage of training, the lowest-ranking Initiates will be leaving us." Everyone started rambling to each other about what Eric said. "To do what?" Will asked. "There's no going home to your families, so you'd live Factionless." Everyone started to ramble again. "Why didn't we know that?" Will protested. "It's a new rule." Eric responded. "A new rule? Somebody should have told us that." Christina also protested. "Why? Would you have chosen differently? Out of fear? I mean, if that's the case, you might as well get out now. If you're really one of us. it won't matter to you that you might fail. Now you chose us. Now we get to choose you." This was just great it was either we succeed in training our no longer have a home and become Factionless.
Later that day we were watching Four fighting another Dauntless to demonstrate fighting techniques, and Four obviously won flipping the guy onto his back. It was now time for target practice. I did pretty well for my first few shots it was my first time shooting a gun especially since they were band in Amity. I noticed Tris was struggling a lot though. "Statistically speaking, you should have hit the target at least once by now. Even by accident." Will said to her. "Wow Will ever heard of a thing called motivation?" Tris laughed at this.
After this was running my favorite well usually if I'm alone. Running in the city wasn't as much fun especially when you couldn't zone out or focus on the noises around you. We had been running for a while when we eventually came upon other Dauntless members watching a group of Factionless. "Hey what you got." Four asked. "Factionless. not doing anything." I couldn't help but overhear Peter say. "Check it out, Stiff. That's gonna be your new family. Go say 'Hi'." I walked over to Tris and whispered. "Don't worry we can get him later."
We were now back in the training area practicing some fighting techniques when Eric came in. First jumper! In the ring. Last jumper! Time to fight. I walked up to the ring and saw a girl named Molly walk up to the ring. "How long do we fight for?" She asked? "Till one of you can't continue." Eric responded. "Or one of you concedes." Four added. "According to the old rules. New rules, no one concedes." I noticed Four had a really concerned look on his face. Four and Eric talked for a little until Eric turned back to us. You'll be scored on this so fight hard. Go!" Molly and I started by circling each other. "Stop playing around and fight!" Molly through the first punch but I blocked it and punched her in the stomach. She quickly regrouped and managed to hit me right in the jaw. It sent me tumbling to the ground. Before I could regroup she managed to get a few more hits. "Come on Roxy you got this!" I heard from the crowd. I got back on my feet she through another punch but I grabbed her wrist and hit her in the throat and then swept her legs. I heard a lot of people gasp and cheer. I was able to pin her arms down and get some of my own punches in before she flipped us over but before she could get another hit I punched her hard in the temple knocking her out. People cheered again as I got out from under her. Two people came out with a stretcher and carried her to the infirmary. I walked out of the ring and saw Four walking toward me but before he could say anything we had to gather near Eric. "All right, guys, over here. Listen up. Know what this board is? It's your life. We grade you every day. If you're still in the red by the end of the first stage, you're out." I searched for my name and saw I ranked 5th and saw Tris' who was ranked 32nd.
(Hey hoped you liked this it was also my first time writing a fighting scene so if you have any ways you think I could improve feel free to tell me. See you in the next part!)
