I sit in the hallway with an embarrassed sigh. I always thought I'd be made fun of for having a good singing voice, I mean it just seemed wrong, I have a high-pitched voice in general so I thought I'd be bullied for that too.
"What's the problem?" Carl asks.
"Whuh? Oh! Nothing, nothing, I just, didn't expect you to barge in like that, I didn't reaally want you to hear me singing." I scratch the back of my neck."Why? You're a really nice singer, I would let you sing me a lullaby and we're fourteen." Carl says, putting his hand on my shoulder.
"Eeeyeah but it's always been my.. PRIVATE thing." I sigh. hugging my knees. "I just... I don't know, guess I always liked being the only person knowing because I felt people were gonna exploit me for that shit." What a terrible fucking lie."It's okay, dude, but we need shit to pass the time so you and Beth singing is nice." Carl smiles. "Now come on. Cheer up."
"Yeah you're right." I get up with a smile.""Carl?" Rick calls out. "Joseph? Guys! Guys?" We run around a corner and stop in front of Rick
"You okay?" Carl asks, we walk up to Rick.
"I was gonna ask you guys that." Rick says, out of breath.
"Everyone's fine." I smile.
"No one's sick? You didn't have to do anything?" Rick asked nervously, I shook my head.
"Haven't had to use my gun, Dad." Carl says gently reassuring his father and reducing his worry.
"Judith?" Rick asks.
"She's with Beth." Carl starts saying.
"Her and Beth are safe." I smile, finishing his sentence.
"Good. Found some food on the run." He tossed the bag to us. "A bunch of fruit leathers in there. Have everybody brush their teeth after." Carl picks up the bag.
"Can we come out soon?" Carl asks.
"Not just yet." Rick replies.
"Expected" I grumble. I cross my arms unamused.
"Dad, we were around you in the middle of it." Carl states. "We were around Patrick. I didn't get it, neither did Joseph. We can help you." I smile and nod.
"Thanks, but, I need you guys to stay here." My smile immediately drops.
"Why, Rick?" I ask. "I have been cooped up in here and singing lullabies to children while Carl stands around scouting, why do we need to be in here."
"We will stay. But, Dad. You can't keep us from it" Carl sighs.
"From what?" Rick asks.
"From what always happens." Carl states.
"Yeah. Maybe,. but I think it's my job to try." He walks off. Leaving us standing ther.
"Ugh sometimes he rattles my bones." I grumble.
"I have... Never heard anyone say that." Carl says.
"It's stupid, we should be able to help!" I punch a wall.
"Ughhh, why can't we be out there!?" Carl grumbles with a sigh. "We're happy and healthy and NOT dead or dying. We are perfect help, so what's the restraints and shackles for?"
"I don't know but I'm NOT staying here much longer, no way in hell." I say, kicking the papers on the floor.
"Seriously, this place is raggedy and a mess. We're stuck here with kids, and I can't even see Judith." Carl says angrily.
"Okay, Carl, let's calm down." I hug him gently. "Take some breaths. We are doing the second most important thing. Keeping the kids safe. The first would be curing the prison."
