Alora POV

Life in the pack has been busier than ever. There's a lot to take care of: housing the newcomers, stocking up for winter, securing the border and training. We have been training non-stop, one-on-one, defensive moves, joint attack, squad training, and security protocols.

Having new arrivals every week keeps me twice as occupied. Whenever we receive our allies, I search their minds for any sign of danger. In times of war, we can never be too careful.

The training grounds had been our principal gathering place lately. Every wolf spends most of their day in there. The allies we received had boosted the competition around here. I am glad to see an increasing amount of she-wolf warriors amongst our lines. Thana has made so many new friends.

So far, we have won every single one-on-one combat, probably because I haven't faced Silas or Delantley yet. There are also a couple of new wolves I've had my eye on who are graceful and meticulous in their moves. Hopefully, for the next rotation, I'll get to face them.

"Wanna take a shower with me?" Kasthor ran to me shirtless from the far side of the field, where he was teaching some sneak attacks to the newer wolves.

His chest was shining from the sweat, and his neck showed the black art I impregnated on it a couple of weeks ago. I loved seeing it, and I could barely resist staring at it. Having such a powerful wolf loving me and devoted to me gave me a sense of pride. I was the one his heart chose to love without being forced by some magic bond.

I was his, and he was mine, even if it was only for a glimpse of time.

"You'll have to carry me there because my legs are dead," I said as I jumped on him and wrapped my legs around his waist.

"Hey, lovebirds, to my office. Now." Jathred interrupted our plans with his own.

What a shame.

We only have two weeks until our last allies arrive. That means I have less than fourteen days left with Kasthor before we all go into war mode. Since I told him about Thana sensing our mate, we have been glued to each other more than ever. We take every opportunity we can to spend time together, which unfortunately aren't too many with so much work to be done.

"What's going on?" I asked our Alpha the moment I closed his office door with the three of us inside.

"There has been a change of plans. The young Alpha from the Mountains who was supposed to arrive this weekend will stay home. The Mountain Packs have united to protect their side of the border, but they won't join us in the fight nor they'll be sending any of their warriors." Jathred announced with frustration.

"That's upsetting. Once again, the Desert is in charge of defeating an army without any help. All those packs benefit from our sacrifice, yet they don't move a single muscle to deserve peace." I said, annoyed.

I can't understand how wolves can behave with such apathy at the threat of war. How can they not feel the necessity to protect life as they know it?

"He is young and still learning. Most likely, he was advised against joining the fight. I heard he is unmated, and he doesn't have any brothers or descendants. Risking his life is risking his whole pack." Jathred was always considerate when it came to understanding other's motivations.

"I am more concerned about your mate." My Alpha took a sharp turn on the conversation I didn't see coming. How does this relate to me?

"My mate? Why?" I questioned.

Kasthor had his eyes locked on his brother and his arms wrapped across his chest. I know any conversation about my mate makes him uncomfortable. I wish Jathred didn't have called him here. This conversation will sour his mood for the rest of the evening.
