Alora POV

When Jathred turned 27, he invited high-ranking members from packs all over the continent to join us in the celebration.

The invitation served two purposes. First, Jathred wanted to meet with the rest of the Alphas to discuss an ongoing issue with increased rouge attacks in our borders and trade routes. We got intel from our scouts of a rogue army gathering at the edge of the Forest Territories near the human settlements, but it was too far from us to dimension its threat level. The second reason was that this event could be Jathred's perfect chance to find his mate and give our pack a Luna.

Alphas are usually mated with strong wolves from high-ranked families. Delantley had been restlessly insisting Jathred to find their mate for weeks before his birthday. He was getting anxious with the rogue attacks, and his wolf needed stability. Finding his Luna was necessary to bring balance to his life and strengthen our pack.

A couple of days before his birthday, Delantley was even more anxious than ever. He had a feeling his mate was getting closer. A part of me was genuinely happy about Jathred finding his mate, he deserved to find his fated soulmate, and our pack deserved to have an official Luna. For the last couple of years, since I found out Jathred wasn't my fated mate, our relationship had turned into one that siblings share. I loved him, but only as a brother, honestly, I couldn't think of him in any other way but as a family member.

In contrast, a big part of me feared that Kasthor would find his mate. I know that's selfish, but losing him was my worst nightmare. I don't see Kasthor the same way I see Jathred, no. Kasthor had become the shivers in my back when no one was looking. He raced my blood, my heart rate, and my feelings. He was the reason I would always run into the diner excited to catch his gaze and turn into the Muse that lighted up his seductive smile.

"How are you feeling?" Kasthor asked me while we helped set up the main dining hall where our Alpha's birthday party would be held the next night.

"I am happy for Jathred," I answered insecurely.

"You are worried" He didn't ask me, he stated the obvious, hugging me tight.

"Just a little," I whispered, burying my nose in his neck. I was more than just a little worried, but I didn't want him to know that.

"Can Thana feel her mate?" He asked. He was worried too, for the same reason I was. There was a big chance for me to find my mate with so many male wolves coming.

"She knows he's alive, but she doesn't feel him near. I don't think I'll be meeting him soon." I refused to let go of his embrace and hugged him back as hard as possible. I wanted to reassure him he didn't have anything to worry about.

"What about Silas? Can he feel his mate?" I finally asked him, unsure if I wanted to know the answer.

"No, all he can think of is playing with Thana. Do you want to ditch this and go out for a run?" Kasthor proposed letting go of our embrace and offering me one of his mischievous side smiles.

As always, I followed him.

We shifted and spent the next five hours running around the grasslands, chasing each other and waiting for the sunset. All I could think of was the possibility of this night being our last sneak-out together. If Kasthor meets his mate tomorrow, I will lose my late-night runs partner.
