*Ember's POV*
You may have thought I would burn this boy to a crisp with his smart aleck words and the sneaky smile on his face. Nope. I doubled over laughing at how stupid his joke was. The boy stared down at me, still grinning. I stood up and offered my hand. "Good one. My name's Ember. What's yours?"

"Seto," said he, "and won't I burn my hand if I touch you?"

"No," I chuckled, extinguishing the flames on my hand and shaking his. It seems that his grin was permanently plastered to his face, until he noticed flames dancing on his wooden porch.

"Oh--," he started cursing and stomping on the fire. "Do something!"

"I can't! All I can do is make more fire!" I was panicking.

"Go get water or something!" He pushed me towards a river. I quickly grabbed my bucket out of my backpack and rushed to the stream. I was in the proccess of filling my bucket when I heard a familiar hissing noise behind me. "Oh no." The creeper exploded and I plunged into the water with a scream.

*Seto's POV*
I heard a boom and a scream. I saw Ember slip into the water as the ground under her caved in. I watched as my house burst into flames. Her or it? Her or it? I knew I had a filled bucket of water somewhere in my chests, but Ember, being a fire hybrid, would die within moments. But who would want her? She was arrogant and persnickety, self-absorbed, high, and mighty.
I made my decision ran to the water. I saw her form splayed out on the bottom, steam hissing like the creeper that had ultimately destroyed her. I dove into the water just as my house exploded. The fire had reached the potions. I inwardly sighed...more explosions...and continued to swim. My lungs were beginning to burn, so I grabbed a Potion of Water Breathing from my backpack and drank it. I grabbed Ember's arm, scooped her up, and swam upward. My chest ached, but I had my hands full with Ember and couldn't grab another potion. I gritted my teeth and swam up.
Finally, my head burst through the surface. My cloak dragged me down and I swallowed some water while attempting to breath. I choked and gasped as I collapsed on the bank with Ember in my arms. I turned over and coughed.
I cursed myself. Ember was probably dead by now and my house burned down for nothing and--was that a cough? I looked at the still form in my arms. It stirred slightly. Ember opened one eye and saw my dripping wet face, staring agape at her. My hood fell off and I smiled crookedly. She rolled over and coughed up water. I stared at her shuddering form. She sat up and croaked, "Thanks."

*TIMELAPSE*

*Ember's POV*
I sank through the water and felt myself drain. I hit the bottom and lay there, squinting up at the sun. SPLOOSH! A figure swam strongly towards me. Seto, I thought. The black skintight dress I wore under the fire didn't provide any drag when Seto lifted me up and started swimming to the surface. My ribs throbbed in need of oxygen. Seto was nearing the surface and I pressed closer to him, shivering and closing my eyes. He broke the surface with a gasp and sunk under for a second. He choked and fell onto the bank. I opened my eyes after a moment and looked at his gaping wet face. His hood slipped off and my eyes shined as he smiled at me. I coughed the water out of my lungs and breathed deeply. "Thanks," I coughed with a half-hearted grin. Then the world spiraled into blackness as my head fell back into Seto's arms.

A/N: Hey guys! If you've read any of my other books--which I suggest you do--you would know I can't really write a story without a touch of sugar (romance). But don't worry. This is NOT going to be inappropriate or focusing on romance, it's just a touch to make it a little more interesting.
