Nicolina Martell moves to Jacksonville to escape her past, but she runs right into the world she tried to escape from.
Mitch Warner is a mute underg...
Mitch slept through the entire night, his head was in my lap as I sat up in the bed. I stared into space as I continuously ran my fingers through his hair. He had thrown up when Oliver showed two fingers in his throat last night, then Mitch had fallen asleep.
I couldn't wait for him to wake up, to explain what happened-if he even remembered. I could imagine how freaked out he would get, just like how I had.
I wanted to know about the blackeye too. Oliver came in every two hours to check up on us both, in case I had fallen asleep. But I couldn't. Not when I didn't know how Mitch was feeling.
Once again Oliver came in, we'd just passed twelve hours. He shot me a sad smile as he saw I remained in the same position as when he checked in two hours ago.
"Hi, any signs?" He half whispered as he approached the bed. I shook my head no with a deep frown. I felt tears brimming in my eyes as I looked down at Mitch.
He looked like he was deeply asleep, but he didn't look peaceful, he had a strained look on his face and beads of sweat settled on his forehead.
"I can't believe some girl took advantage of him like this, what are people thinking? Who does that?" I said, my voice cracked and a few tears fell.
Oliver sat next to me without touching Mitch. "Mitch is popular, he's always been. Even before he became mute, I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but-I'm not. Girls throw themselves at him as soon as they get the chance" Oliver said with a frown and rubbed my shoulder.
"I'm sorry" He added. "I still can't believe it, who knows how far she'd have gone..." I said and trailed off, another droplet of tears fell and hit Mitch's face.
Not one movement showed, I quickly wiped them away and Oliver sighed. "He should be waking up soon, if he doesn't we're gonna have to get him to the ER" Oliver said with a frown.
Suddenly the door opened once again, everyone snuck in without making any noise, Fran, Celina and West were first, then North and Michael behind him.
"Hi, how is he doing?" Fran whispered. I shook my head, giving them a negative response. Everyone sighed and frowned a little, on cue, Mitch began to stir, Oliver stepped back a little, I raised a brow and just as he did, Mitch shot up in the bed, his head missing my head by an inch.
"Woah-easy, easy" Oliver called out as Mitch lunged out after Oliver and grabbed his shirt, he yanked him down towards him and I could practically hear his heart hammering, his breath was harsh and urgent.
"Mitch, please" I begged him, I sat up and put my hands on his bare shoulders. His head snapped towards mine and he eased visibly.
"Let go of him, let go" I told him, he shoved Oliver back and I pulled him back towards me by his shoulders. "Leave, get out, everyone" I called out.
His breathing was still ragged and heavy, I succeeded in pulling Mitch back against my chest, he relaxed more.
Everyone hurried out and I leaned my head back against the headrest on the bed. "Okay, that didn't go as planned" I muttered before attempting to slide out from behind Mitch, but he wasn't having it and grabbed my thigh.
'Stay' He signed with his other hand. He leaned his head back against my collarbone, and I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"I'm here, I'm not leaving" I whispered. 'What happened?' He signed after a good ten minutes.
"Okay...." I muttered and sighed in defeat. This time I succeeded in sliding out behind him, I sat next to him instead, he watched me the entire time.
'You wore that at the club?' He signed. I chuckled a little and nodded. "I did" I confirmed and he scowled at me.
"Listen, so, how much do you remember?" I ask him. 'Not much, my second drink and looking for you, that's it' he signed.
"Mitch, you were drugged, at least that's the only explanation for what happened-" He held up his hand to stop me, so I paused.
'What happened?' He signed. "It doesn't matter, I found you and Oliver and I got you out of the club-" He cut me off again by glaring at me.
I sighed in defeat and decided to give him what he wanted, the truth. No matter how disturbing it would be.
"I found you sitting alone, the guys had lost you. A girl was practically dry humping you as she straddled you, you weren't present at all. It became clear that something was very wrong, so I yanked the girl off of you and tried to make you respond, but you were just...gone" I explained.
'Did she do anything to me?' He signed with sadness in his eyes. "I don't-I don't know for sure, but I got her off of you the second I found you" I half whispered.
'I'm sorry' he signed with guilt. "Why are you sorry?" I ask him, confused.
'I don't know for sure if anything happened' He signed and ran a hand over his face. "It's okay, if anything happened you didn't consent to it, Mitch. Don't be sorry" I muttered.
"I understand if you want space, just say so and I'll get out of here" I said and began to get up from the bed, but Mitch grabbed my wrist to stop me.
'Don't' he signed, I was confused but still nodded my head and what he did next took me by surprise. He cupped my face and pressed his lips to mine.
I hadn't expected him to do this, not after what happened last night. I was somehow relieved and kissed him back gently. Careful to not push him.
When we pulled away for air, he leaned his forehead against mine. 'I'm sorry' he signed again. "Stop saying that, it wasn't you" I say with a small smile.
"Now, what's with the blackeye? Who did that and what happened?" I asked him. He pulled his forehead from mine and sighed.
He bit his lip and I narrowed my eyes before grabbing a notepad on the nightstand and a pen. I handed it to him and he started writing.
A minute later he handed it to me.
'I got into a fight with Thomas- he wants me to sign over the company to him. I said no and we fought' I read out loud under my breath and frowned when I registered the words.
"The company? Your fathers company?" I questioned and he nodded. "He is still in a coma, so why would you sign over the company to your uncle?" I ask him.
'Corrupt' He signed. I frowned a little, then the doors burst open. Both of us jumped in surprise as Oliver ran in, his chest was heaving with fast breaths.
"Mitch, your father woke up" He half shouted. Mitch froze and pulled away from my touch and to be honest, I expected happiness and joy to shoot out of Mitch, but it was the opposite.
'Leave. Go home' He signed to me, without looking at me. I frowned at the sudden change of behavior. 'Now' He added, my face fell and hurt washed over me.
Oliver's face fell as well.
I took one last look at him and got out of the bed. He avoided my eyes, his jaw was clenched, he was angry. But why?
Shouldn't he be happy? His father woke up from a coma, he'd been in for four years... Yet his reaction was to throw me out of his cousin's house.
"I'm sorry" Oliver whispered to me as I passed him. I looked over my shoulder only to see Mitch still avoiding my eyes. So, I slammed the door harshly after me as I left.
