"Callie!? Are you okay?"
Andrea came running, looking up at my face. She poured a glass of water.
"Here...get some of that water in your system."
I took a sip.
"What's wrong? You turned pale through that meeting. Did Donnor say something? Are you exhausted?"
"SAY SOMETHING!?"
I coughed, getting back to the cooking pot.
"I am just not feeling well, Andrea."
"Poor you...." She rubbed my back.
"Go get some rest. I will handle this."
I looked at her, struggling to maintain eye contact.
"No...we have a lot of soup to make...you can't handle it alone..."
"May I help?"
A sharp voice interrupted. We looked up.
Slicked black hair and a flashy smile.
Jasper.
I didn't want to be rude for no reason.
"Uh...sure..."
He came and stood in between us. His thick arms sparked against mine. I shifted, looking away.
"I can stir the pot. You both focus on the rest."
"Thanks Jasper. I hope you don't get caught though..." Andrea said, adding water to the bowl.
A laugh beamed on his face. Even though he wasn't talking to me, my shoulders relaxed at ease.
"Don't worry about it. I will leave before he comes. Besides he is busy finding the traitor."
"Oh yes...the traitor...who do you think it could be?" She asked. My hands froze on the veggies.
"Ah...it's hard to say. I bet one of the new ones."
I pressed my lips, throwing the veggies in a glass bowl.
"Oh, the ones who came with Callie?"
I looked up at her. My forehead grew tense.
Jasper nodded.
"I suppose."
I stared at the pot. My thoughts raced. Jasper didn't suspect me. Neither did Andrea.
Hmm...Jasper probably knows where the others are.
He continued stirring the pot, giving both of us a quick look.
Jasper is one decent man. That's for sure.
A few minutes passed in silence. None of us spoke. But my mind grew loud. Loud at that moment, his eyes met mine. He didn't say my name.
Why?
First, he threatens me and my family. Then does nothing about it. Now he is protecting me?
Why this sudden change? All I have been is a pain in the ass. I haven't done one single thing properly. I can't cook. I can't clean the shelves. I can't help Andrea. I can't escape.
Tears blurred my eyes. I stared at the boiling bubbles of the soup.
Wait!!
I held Jasper's arm, clinging him back. The stirring spoon landed in the distance.
I turned off the gas stove.
Oof.
"This thing was about to burn!"
