"Eh...ma'am, you look pale, is everything fine?"
The taxi driver smoothened his hairy moustache, glancing at me from the windscreen.
I coughed, looking out of the window.
"Mind your own business."
The rest of the ride went dead silent as I soon reached the entrance of the airport.
Marie called out as I soon joined her. We stumbled across a food plaza, burrowing our base there for the time being.
"Ma'am, you look pale." She made the same comment, giving me a Déjà Vu.
"It's nothing, Marie..." But my reply this time was different.
I snapped a bite of the sandwich I had ordered, peeping at the other table. The other members of our gang, Rick and Daisy were done, waiting for us to finish.
"But you know you can tell me anything.."
I forced a smile.
"I know...I know..."
Marie wasn't only my office's guard and occasional maid, but also a good friend. She was too sophisticated and polite for her good.
"Is it about your mother?"
And just like that, she hit the right nerve.
I looked down at the table, chewing my sandwich.
She held my hand like a feather had fallen on crumbling ash.
"It will be fine. I am there regardless...you know it..."
I did. But it still hurt. Instead of the sandwich, the sound of people chattering bloated my head.
Rick and Daisy joined us at our table.
"Ma'am, are we good to go?" Daisy asked, looking at the flashing flight numbers on the board.
"What are you on about!? We have two hours!"
Rick shot back, his freckled face combusting.
I rolled my eyes.
"Okay, folks. Can we chin up? Taylor wanted us to arrive a couple of hours before."
"Why?"
Marie asked, standing up.
All eyes were on me. I sighed.
"What is it!?"
Daisy spoke up, her blue eyes losing color.
From the look on their faces, I could tell they knew what was coming.
I cleared my throat, throwing in the floor plan of the airport on the table.
"Donnor James is on the run. He is suspected of fleeing from this airport."
Silence dropped. I handed the plan to a shocked Marie, signalling her to pass it to the others.
"Just take a brief look at the exit points. And don't worry. I am here."
I retaliated as we stood up, our eyes scanning every nook and cranny of the airport.
Marie muttered something under her breath, handing the floor plan to Rick and Daisy.
Ah. Silence. What a moment of bliss. At least they won't disturb me for a while.
"You are telling us NOW!?" Rick shouted, breaking the silence in one go.
Maybe not.
I sighed.
