Afraid

The man stroking his beard spoke up.

"That bullock of a man didn't even describe the categories."

Everyone nodded.

"Let's just get it over with...."

I sighed, looking at the door. He might burst in any second.

One of the women announced, "I will take meetings...seems safe."

But the other tilted his face.

"I wanted it."

"Yeah, but I said it first."

"No!"

"Yes!"

I rolled my eyes.

"Please don't argue. How about I assign everyone a category?"

"No! That would give you the advantage."

"Well, someone HAS to take the advantage. We all know the categories."

"It's okay! The detective should have the advantage anyway. It would help escape."

The young girl stepped in to stop the fight between them.

They looked at each other, then back at me, nodding.

Damn, these children.

Everyone huddled in a circle around me.

"Okay, so I will take murderer. You, young lady, take meetings. Both of you can take either bodies or dealings. You, young guy, handle the weapons."

"Weapons!? Me!? No offense detective but shouldn't you handle the weapons? I don't want to shoot people!"

I folded my arms.

"No. I am a detective. Not a shooter."

"But---"

"I am done here. Also, you guys, hurry the fuck up! I think I heard footsteps just now..."

The woman popped in.

"Weapons and murders are tricky categories. You don't know which one could involve shooting. I think both do."

"Or they could be silent murders."

I stated otherwise, clearing my throat.

The woman came closer to me.

"Are you afraid, detective?"

Afraid was an interesting word. But maybe it was me standing by my morals.

I blinked at her.

Maybe if I would have pulled the trigger at Donnor earlier, I wouldn't have been here.

No. This isn't you Callie. Stop it. Stay in the moment. You don't question the what-ifs. That is why Taylor let you have the detective agency in the first place.

"I am not afraid. I am the detective. Also, we have to stay in touch somehow. I think---"

The door opened. A muscled man barged in with a group of five men, each grabbing our arms.

"Send them to their respective areas."

"Okay, boss."

Oh gosh, did they hear everything?

Something crossed my mind. I looked around the ceiling.

There was a CCTV camera in the corner! Shoot! I am such a dumb ass.

But I looked carefully. The CCTV lights weren't blinking.

Maybe there was hope.

We were led out of the room, and back outside in the fountain area. From there we took the way back to the tunnel in silence.
