"And all those things I didn't say, wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight. Can you hear my voice this time?"
Zayn POV
"Ma'am, if you'll wait here, I'll go get your medicine."
Mildred, the 85-year-old with Alzheimer's in front of me, nodded and closed her eyes. She would be asleep by the time I even made it out of the room, but I hated telling patients they weren't allowed to go to sleep. Looks like I would just have to wake her up when I got back.
"Oh, Nurse Malik?" Nurse Thomas said as I closed the door to Mildred's room, "You're already getting her medicine?"
"Yeah, I told you that I would."
"I know, but it's fine. Don't worry about it. I'll be able to do it."
"Why?" I asked, pulling off my gloves and turning to walk away, "I'm free, and she's my patient. Who else would do it?"
"Someone who didn't just have a b-."
The glare on my face cut him off before my fingers around his throat could.
"Okay, yeah," he answered, wisely taking a step back, "Yeah, I agree. Go ahead and get her medicine. I'll be down the hall if you need me."
"I won't."
He nodded and walked away to my relief. Everyone had been so very annoying for the past two days. When I showed up to work, my boss actually said "What are you doing here?" After some colorful words from myself, instead of actually speaking to me, everyone just gave me somber looks when they passed me in the hospital.
It was pissing me off to say the least. They looked at me like I was going to break, and it was insulting. Losing people is a part of life. Getting upset over it is a waste of time and not going to bring them back. I didn't understand the sadness.
"Zayn!" a girl named Maria said once she saw me walking in her direction, "I heard about what happened. I'm so-."
"Maria," I stopped her, trying very hard to keep my composure and losing by the second, "I like you and all, but if you finish that sentence, it'll be the last thing you ever say to me."
She frowned and opened her mouth to say something. The look on my face told her that I wasn't even close to kidding, so she just gave me an odd look and hurried away.
I assume that word had gotten out about how I was treating people because most of the nurses ended up avoiding me for the rest of my shift. I didn't mind. The less they bothered me, the less furious I was.
The only freedom that I got was the new guy not knowing anything so he thankfully talked about normal stuff. He was the only person that I didn't want to strangle, patients included.
"Hey, Zayn. Can you do me a favor?"
He obviously hadn't paid enough attention in training to know that you were supposed to refer to every nurse by their last name while on duty, but I didn't care enough to correct him.
"Yeah, Nurse Johnson," I laughed, "What do you need?"
"Can you go to the pediatrics wing and take care of Mrs. Thomas for me? It's my-."
Everything he said after 'pediatrics wing' was complete and utter nonsense to me. My vision got fuzzy, my head got foggy, and I could feel myself losing my sanity. I felt myself losing control.
But, I didn't care.
One second I was frozen, not even blinking for a full minute. I don't think God himself could've shaken me out of the trance that I was in.
