adriana's pov
there i stood in front of my full length mirror, scanning my cheer uniform. i was still tired since i woke up at 5am to do my hair and makeup. now, i'm making sure my uniform is all straightened out.
i slid in my cheer shoes and hoisted my gym bag over my shoulder and headed downstairs. i saw my little sister at the dining room table eating a bowl of cereal. "morning adri" my dad greeted me from the kitchen.
"morning dad" i replied. i went to the fridge to grab a yogurt. "i know todays game day so i thought i'd leave the office early, and come take mari to see you cheer" my dad said kindly. my eyes lit up, "really?"
dad nodded. this almost never happens. we hugged. "thank you dad" i said. i said goodbye to him and mari and i was off to school. i was actually excited to cheer today. dad hasn't attended any of my games since my junior year.
i parked my car and went inside school. immediately, i went to the girls restroom to look at myself once more. i teased my ponytail and adjusted my diamond studded bow. i reapplied my bright red lipstick and smiled at myself.
i've been cheering since i was a little girl. i knew my mom would be proud of me for sticking with it even after she's passed. i stood there a bit longer and stephanie walked in, in our cheer uniform.
"ready for tonights game?" stephanie asked, staring at herself in the mirror. "yup" i replied, blankly. "just don't try to mess up when catching drea like you did in practice" stephanie turned to look at me. i scoffed.
"stephanie, you're practically the most useless member on the squad. you've been cheering for what, a year?" i stepped closer to her. she stayed quiet. "it'd be so easy to replace you. don't forget you're talking to the captain of the squad" i said with a smile. with that, i left.
i began walking to my first class. out of all people, who did i see walking toward me? johnny. "hey adri" johnny smiled at me. "hi" i replied. "cheering at tonights game?" he said, looking me up and down. "how'd you know?" i asked, with a giggle.
i saw someone walk passed us but didn't pay attention to who. johnny chuckled. "you doing anything after?" he asked. "no, why?" i could feel my stomach churn with excitement.
"i was thinking maybe we--" johnny was cut off with the sound of the fire alarm. my shoulder reached my ear, in annoyance. i looked down the hallway and saw oakley walking around the corner.
my jaw dropped. did he-?
"everyone form a single file line!" i heard a teacher yell. no fucking way. the halls flooded and i couldn't see johnny anymore. eventually i was swept around and was grouped with my class. i groaned to myself.
after a while, it was time to go back to class. everyone was returning to their classrooms and i saw oakley in a line for a classroom down that hall. i raced to him and used almost all my strength to shove him which caused him to bump into the person in front of him.
oakley turned around with flames in his eyes and noticed it was me. he relaxed his expression but still was stone faced. "the fuck was that for?" oakley asked, looking down at me. "i know what you did" i said, crossing my arms. his expression didn't change.
"i don't know what you're talking about, adriana" oakley turned back around to enter his classroom. "you pulled the fire alarm as johnny was about to ask me out" i said, a bit louder than anticipated.
oakley stopped in his tracks and turned around with an unholy laugh. "adriana, i promise no one cares about you that much to do somethin' like that, much less me" oakley said, taking a step with each pause to emphasize his point.
