Chapter 4

"Lori did you set the table yet?" My mom yelled from the kitchen.

"Doing it right now," I say as I place the last of the silverware on the table. "There, I'm done. Mom, has the water started to boil yet?"

"Uh huh."

"Then turn the heat down. I will be there in just a sec." I then hurry to the kitchen to check on the food. My dad and Dylan are still at his office and won't be home until sometime around 10:00. Since my mom couldn't cook if her life depended on it, I have to do all of the cooking for dinner tonight.

"I'm so glad you invited Kal over! He is such a nice boy, and cute too! Didn't you say that his sister is coming too?" Mom asked excitedly.

"Yep his sister's name is Kaylee. I've never met her, but she sounds really nice."

I then checked on the bread that was baking in the oven when the door bell suddenly rang.

"That must be them!" My mom squealed. "You answer the door and I'll finish cooking."

"All you need to do is get out the plates and take the pots off the heat. Take the bread out of the oven too. It's almost done. Do not do anything else!"

"All right Lori. I'm not a child. I can finish dinner without my sixteen year old daughter's help."

"The last time you tried that we all had food poisoning."

The door bell rang again.

"I'll be right there!" I yell as I hurry to the front door. I open the door and am immediately tackled in a hug.

"Ohmygosh! You must be Lori! I'm so happy I finally get to meet you! I've heard so much about you from Kal already! We are going to be best friends! I can feel it!"

"Umm, who are you?" I ask as I extract myself from her grasp. She had long dark hair and sky blue eyes that matched Kal's. Oh! She must be Kaylee!

"Lori this is Kaylee. Kaylee, as I think you've already figured out, this is Lori. Kal said as he grabbed his sister'a wrist and drug her back to his side. "I hope you don't mind but we brought a friend," Kal motioned behind him to a girl with dirty blond hair and chocolate brown eyes. The girl waved at me and said, "Hi I'm Darcy. It's nice to finally meet you. Kal hasn't shut up about you yet so-"

"So, it's time for dinner right?" Kal interrupted. And I noticed that he was blushing.

"Um, yeah it will be ready in a few minutes. I'll show you guys to the dining room."

I began to walk inside when my mom yelled front he kitchen, "Lori did I need to take the bread out of the oven? Cause' it's still in there!"

"Oh shoot! You guys can go ahead an go to the dining room. It's the second room to the right!" I yell over my shoulder as I run into the kitchen. I yank over the oven door and take the bread out. I sighed with relief as I had made it just in time. The bread was a golden brown, flaky, and smelled like heaven.

"That looks good!" Kal exclaimed from right behind me.

To say I jumped would be an understatement.

"Oh, hey Kal! What's u-" I say right before I trip over the still open oven door.

"Are you okay Lori?" Kal asked with concern in his voice.

I opened my eyes and realize three things.

1. Kal had caught me.

2. I was pressed up tight against his chest.

3. My mom was right. Kal was cute.

"I'm fine. Thanks for catching me," I said as I glanced up and into his eyes. Wow, his eyes are beautiful.

"Lori, I-"

"Are you okay Lori? That looked like a really bad fall!" Kaylee interrupted.

"I wouldn't worry about her if I was you Kaylee. I think she is just fiiine," Darcy said with a smirk.

"Well you kids sure look like your having fun!" My mom said as she walked into the kitchen. "If you guys are finished in here we can start dinner."

"I think that's a great idea Mrs.Reed. I had both soccer and track practice today so I'm starved!" Darcy said as she picked up a plate and started to get food.

"Lori did you make all this? Do you like cooking too? I love cooking! It's so much fun!" Kaylee said with a grin.

"It is really fun isn't it!"

Kaylee suddenly hugged me again. "Yes! I found one! Finally someone else who can cook!"

"I can't cook and neither can Kal," Darcy informed me as we sat down for dinner. "Kaylee has no one to talk to about her hobby so that's why she gets so excited when someone else cooks too. She tends to be really excitable. If she annoys you just tell her and she'll stop. Don't worry about hurting her feelings or anything. She really doesn't mind."

"I don't mind, I like cooking," I say with a smile.

"Good, then Kaylee and you will get along great!" Darcy said right before taking another bite of spaghetti. "This is so good Lori!"

The rest of the dinner was pretty uneventful. My mom gave a lecture on why government was so messed up a Darcy stood up, hugged her, and said that she was her new favorite person. Kaylee told stories about Kal when he was little, while Kal repeatedly told her to shut up and that she didn't have to tell everyone she met about the time he ran away from home and slept in the dog house in their yard.

After everyone had finished eating we said our goodbyes and I headed to my new bedroom. The walls were white and the carpet was cream. My bed was shoved into a corner and my lime green comforter was thrown on it. Boxes were piled up along the walls and halfway covered a window that had a view of Kal's house. Oh my gosh. I could see Kal's house from my room. That's kinda creepy. Pushing that thought aside I grabbed my backpack. I grabbed a few drawings from my sketchbook and taped them up on the wall. That was better. Dad and Dylan still weren't home so I decided to take advantage of the peace and quiet. I changed into an old t-shirt and shorts and promptly fell asleep.
