Chapter 5 - Remembrance

On the above floor, Jason paced around his office. He corrected the position of a wonky frame, before pausing and picking it up. The photo was of his ex Cassandra, who had backstabbed him several years previously. She had played with his feelings and taken most of his savings before running away. This was before he had set up his company.

He sincerely regretted ever having known Cassandra and believing that she loved him. The signs were obvious, but he had chosen to ignore them in vain hopes of having found someone who truly loved him. 'A waste of time.' he had labelled her, before moving on swiftly.

Now he had his business empire, he was perfectly content. At least he thought he should be. He had a large top-floor office and several estates in his name, along with a series of classy cars. What else could he ask for? Every day was the same routine though. Yet more paperwork and more meetings with more rich and haughty men.

He glanced over to his office's mini kitchen. He had left the dishes unwashed and the mini fridge was empty. He hadn't asked for it to be restocked lately. He remembered the time when he decided to leave his office, a rare thing for him to do, and explore the downstairs kitchen in search of better snacks.

He had been in a bad mood, the weather was incredibly hot and his office was sweltering hot like a greenhouse. His mini fridge was not equipped with any frozen snacks, and in an attempt to escape the overwhelming heat of the office, he accepted that he had to eventually face going downstairs.

The minute he stepped foot on the staff floor, he knew that he held the room's attention. He looked out to the sea of desks, where one girl was not eyeing him up and was clearly hard at work. She dressed like the rest of the employees and had her hair up in an ordinary ponytail however it was her attitude that begged to differ from the rest. She was not giving him the time of day as she typed furiously on her keyboard. He faintly remembered an interview in which the girl was practically begging for the job.

He turned his attention to the kitchen, ignoring all the whispers which came from every angle. He began to rummage through the freezer's contents.

''Kass, can you get me a coffee? '' Juliet's head popped over the divider.

''Yes of course. The usual right?'' Kass asked as she pushed her chair back and stood up.

''Mhm,'' Juliet replied as she typed on her computer.

In the kitchen, Jason was taking a plate from the counter and selecting various snacks to place on it. In the corner of his eye, he spotted the extraordinary worker enter the kitchen. She headed to the coffee machine and began to make a coffee. He did not turn his head so as to not attract even more attention from what he was doing but his whole attention was no longer on his Häagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream.

Before he could turn around to return to his office, his right leg began to feel soggy and wet. He heard a thud and a smashing of a mug. The girl had tripped up over herself and had spilled her coffee all over him. He froze in shock, not knowing whether to be frustrated or patient with her.

Her papers were all over the floor in a soggy mess. Her skirt was soaked and so was his pant leg.

Her friend rushed into the room and offered to help her up. Everything was happening extremely fast. The girl looked extremely upset with what had just happened. He took pity on her when she looked up at him with her large and teary sage-green eyes. He grabbed some nearby tissues and offered them to her.

''Here.'' He offered them down to her. She seemed to be frozen in fear, so he pushed them into her hands.

''Take them'' And with that he left the room, taking with him his frozen snacks. He could hear the commotion behind him but blurred it all out as he returned to the elevator.

He was glad, in a way, that he went downstairs that day. He had little faith in his workers but Kass had restored faith in him. She was there early every day and was the last to leave at night.

He glanced across the city, through the glass windows of his office. The sun was setting, casting its glow into his office and lighting everything up. Sunset was his favorite time of day. As a young boy, his parents took him on trips all over the country. Whenever the sun set, his father always told him, ''Take a moment and appreciate what you have, son.''

So now, he stood, with his hands behind his back, looking over the cityscape and appreciating everything he had, starting with Kass.
