Because I love the classics (and vintage books in general), I've compiled a list that I, personally, have been able to read despite my dyslexic learning disabilities.
But before you dive in, I want to add that just because I was able to read them does not mean these books will be easier to read for everyone who is dyslexic. Everyone reads at their own pace and in their own way. And something that which comes easy for one will not come easy for another and vice versa.
However, I hope that this list will still help some of you to be able to read the classics or other vintage books out there.
I have added the Graded ELT readers versions at times because certain classics are impossible for me to read otherwise. At first, I felt ashamed and embarrassed to read graded readers or even children's versions which the latter I'd considered a "baby" version but I read an article once about dyslexic readers that changed my opinion. It said even if you cannot read the original, to be able to read some type of the classic was better than to never read it at all. And that's true. It may be a bit shorter or watered down but at least you're able to read a version of it. That's definitely better than never at all.
With that being said, I chose the closest possible version to the original that I could find that also had the easiest text to read which ended up being Penguin Readers, Pearson English Readers, & Oxford Bookworms. They are specially-designed editions of classics for non-English speaking adults to help them learn the language. Because they use a more modern-style text, I've found them to be immensely easier to read. Lastly, I've added Shakespeare Made Easy which I also found much easier to read.
