To keep her family safe, Alice needed to become proactive. She had been exploring the town for 6 weeks when she decided to obtain Emily Bennet's Grimoire. Her Great Aunt Sheila had only taught her the vital parts of her abilities. There were numerous magics she could perform without spell-casting, but only if she understood the spell's intent. Alice was certain that the grimoire would contain valuable knowledge that would increase her abilities. So far, the only offensive magic she knew was how to induce pain and aneurysms as well as control of the elements.
So on a night that her great aunt was away at a faculty meeting and her grandmother was watching Jeopardy!, Alice used her power of levitation to descend from her second floor bedroom window to the outside of her great aunt's house. She then rode her bicycle for almost an hour before she reached her destination: Giseuppe Salvatore's grave.
Calling on the energy around her, Alice raised her hand and summoned the soil atop the coffin to loosen and disperse onto the ground beside the headstone.
"I feel like Avatar Korra." She spoke to herself.
She paused to reabsorb her energy, then glanced down at the coffin.
"Did I think this through?" She asked herself.
Sighing in acceptance, she levitated down the grave and telekinetically opened the top of the coffin. Her heart stopped for a moment as she took in the sight of the decaying skeleton.
"Sorry, douchebag, but this isn't yours." She told the remains as she unclasped his fingers from the grimoire and took it into her hands. She called the coffin to close before ascending. Holding the grimoire tightly in her left arm, she waved her right hand to invoke the upturned soil to return to its rightful place.
Noticing how dark it was, she quickly placed the grimoire in her bike's basket and straddled the seat to embark on her ride home. As she cruised down the street to her home, she slowed upon realization that Sheila had returned. As quietly as she could, she alighted from her bicycle and tip-toed with it towards her bedroom window. Sensing she was alone, Alice seized the grimoire from her basket and soared up to through her open window. She hastily hid the grimoire under her bed before turning to close her window.
"Alice, are you still awake?" She heard Sheila calling to her.
"Um, yes. I'm thirsty, so I was just gonna come down to get a glass of water." She partially lied.
"Okay, dear."
After switching out of her clothes and into her nightgown, she ventured into the hallway and down the stairs.
"Oh dear, you have dirt on your hands. Go wash them before getting a drink." Sheila admonished her when she entered the kitchen.
"Yes ma'am." Alice obeyed and walked straight to the kitchen sink. "Is it alright if we don't practice tomorrow? I started reading the book Aunt Abby got me for my birthday, and I really want to finish it." She spoke as she washed her hands.
"That's alright. But then we'll need to practice for an extra hour on Sunday."
"Yes ma'am. Thank you."
As Alice grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water from the sink, she thought of her plans for the next day. 'Luckily, I read The Giver in my last life. So I can spend all day tomorrow reading the grimoire without worrying about being questioned about what I read.' Joyful over her brilliance, Alice smiled as she gulped down her much needed drink.
"Good night, Aunt Sheila." She farewelled after placing her glass in the sink.
"Good night, Alice."

The next day, Alice spent hours reading her ancestor's grimoire, only taking breaks to use the restroom and eat meals. The most exciting spell she discovered made her wonder why it was never used in the show. It was much like the spell from the show The Secret Circle. Mixing the blood of a Bennet witch and a mortal, the Bennet witch obtains the ability to locate the mortal and sense when they are near, are in pain, or are in danger.
'This will come in handy.' She thought to herself.
Grabbing a third diary from her birthday set, Alice transcribed all of the noteworthy spells and information from the grimoire. Using a spell from the grimoire, she then cast a curse on her diaries that made it impossible for anybody but her to read them. If anybody other than her attempts to open them, they will become temporarily blind, rendering them unable to read what is written.
When she could no longer write due to the pain in her hand, she decided she had gained enough knowledge for the day. She spelled the floorboards in her closest and hid the grimoire underneath them. For the rest of the night, she went through her notes, committing them to her memory. With the help of a recollection spell, it was an easy feat.

The following day, Alice wandered through the woods, searching for a test subject. Upon finding a coyote, she squealed in excitement. This caught the Coyote's attention and it began growling at the small intruder.
Alice looked it straight in the eyes and gave off an aura of dominance. When it began creeping closer, she motioned towards its paw and the sound of its wrist snapping sounded through the trees. The creature immediately began whimpering and lowered its head in submission. Alice felt satisfied at her accomplishment, but also guilty. So she motioned her hand again to heal its wrist. Taking only a minute to heal, Alice felt relieved that she hadn't crippled the creature.
The coyote then staggered towards the girl and hesitantly placed its head against her palm. Sensing no threat, she bowed slightly and ran her hands through the Coyote's fur. She then looked into its eyes and spoke,"Good boy. I won't hurt you anymore. I just needed to test something."
She stood straight and began walking deeper into the woods. Hearing the sound of following footsteps, she turned and saw the coyote beside her. "What? Am I your owner now?" He made a sort of barking sound in response. "Well, alright. But you can't follow me home later. You'll have stay here."
As if understanding her, he lifted his paw and tapped it twice against the ground. She smiled in return and the two spent the rest of the hour together as she attempted more spells.
"I have to go home now. I'll try to visit again soon." She reassured her new pet.
When they reached the edge of the woods, where her bicycle laid, the coyote lingered behind. "Until next time, Miles!" She thought of a name. As she passed the first street sign of her neighborhood, she could hear a distant howl calling goodbye to her.
