Alice didn't have time to consider the consequences of messing with Hayley's timeline. All she cared about was that a child was abandoned and would spend the rest of her childhood searching for a home if she didn't intervene. Alice hugged her sisters goodbye, strutted to her car, and set her Navigation system to Chance Harbour.

Traffic was moving swiftly, and she arrived at her destination in 96 minutes. She reached a parking lot at a nearby park and began her search on foot. She walked a few yards into the woods and kneeled down to touch the mulch. She received flashes of landmarks leading to the cabin and the wind began blowing in the direction she needed to go. At 5'10", she continually had to duck under low hanging branches and in the 15 minutes she was walking, many leaves had stuck to her hair.

Finally at the cabin, she noticed the overgrown vines surrounding its exterior walls. Chills ran through her as she opened the door. "Hello?" She spoke in the sweetest voice she could muster. Hearing a thud in the back of the house, Alice followed it. In the corner she saw Hayley with nothing but an overgrown tattered shirt and dusty Afghan.  The teenager looked up at the tall stranger with wide eyes and fidgeted with the edge of the blanket.

"Hi. You're Hayley, right?"
The girl scrunched her eyebrows in surprise at hearing her name.
"My name is Alice. I'm here to help you. Some of my ancestors knew yours and they were afflicted with the same….. condition. I haven't triggered my condition yet, so I don't shift like you do. But I can explain what's happening to you. Are you willing to trust me?"

"How did you find me?" She asked dubiously.

"My mom came from a bloodline of witches. Good witches, women who practice light magic in honor of our ancestors. I received visions about you that showed me who you are and where to find you. So I followed those visions here and I want to help you."

"A witch? Like Sabrina?" The thirteen girl had loved watching reruns of Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

"Yes, a lot like Sabrina. Except I age just like everyone else and magic often comes with a price."

"What am I? I mean, I've seen Teen Wolf and Underworld, so I know what a werewolf is but what's happening to me is nothing like that."

"You're right. You are a werewolf, but nothing like what's in the movies. Real werewolves can't be created, they're born. A long time ago a powerful and evil witch was killed by her tribe. But that wasn't enough to stop her, and in revenge she cursed their families with lycanthropy. When they killed her, it was during a full moon. So now, anytime somebody from these families is responsible for a human death, we trigger our curse and are forced to painfully turn under the light of the full moon. I know what you did was an accident. You didn't mean for your friend to die. But the curse doesn't care about that.”

“So I did this? If I hadn't gone on that trip, if I hadn't been the one driving, this never would've happened?” Hayley asked.

“Yes, but you need to remember that you didn't do it on purpose. You're still a good person. You deserve to be loved and cared for. If your adoptive parents aren't willing to accept you for who you are, then you just need to find people who will. Like me. Now I live in Virginia, just a couple hours away. I'm sure that you're hungry and would like some clothes and a shower. Would you like to come home with me?”

“You won't hurt me? Or kick me out?”

“No. You can stay as long as you want to.”

“Okay. I'll come with you.”

It was perfect timing. With school on break on three weeks, it gave Hayley time to get to know Alice and her home. Drawing from her savings account, Alice bought all the supplies needed for a 13-year-old girls bedroom. She wasn't sure how long Hayley would be staying with her, but she was willing to be there for her for however long that was.

On the next full moon, instead of locking her in a cellar, Alice drove back out to the woods and let Hayley shift in a safe place. Hayley was grateful for having a caring adult in her life and was healing from her trauma. When Valentines Day came around, Hayley began expressing an interest in going outside and meeting other kids her age. So after a long conversation with Hayley, it was decided Alice would legally adopt her. With a few forgeries and magical assistance, Hayley was finally in a family that wouldn't abandon her and could protect her.

Hayley began attending Mystic Falls Middle School that fall. Deciding to be truthful with her new family member, Alice told her the truth of being reincarnated. The only thing she left out was that this world was a TV show. Aware of the truth, Tori Donovan and Hayley McCullough became close friends. This gave an excellent excuse for Tori to have sleepovers at Alice’s house.

To the Bennets, she was honest. She explained to Sheila and Abby that she had visions of a young werewolf all alone, and she felt called to take her in. To the rest of the world, Hayley was Alice’s Grandfather’s grandniece whose parents died.

So as of September 2005, the plan was still on the right track. Hopefully the next four years will run just as smoothly.
