Being a spy is not easy. You must hide your identity and expose the other side's secrets, without allowing them to learn about your existence.

The difficulty grows the better the country is at managing its secrets. So is the case of Tempest, one of the biggest countries in the world.

Well, in Tempest's case, many spies had split opinions. Whether the most difficult part was the investigating or the reporting.

It started a few years ago...

The elven spies were sent around the world to gather information for their celestial empress since ancient times. A dedicated unit was made for the duke's daughter, Elwyn Grimwald. As the little princess ventured into the forest, this team was the first to report about the existence of a gathering of monsters.

Monsters from different races are gathered in the forest under a talking slime, who took a human shape.

The head of the intelligence team wondered how to make this unbelievable sentence a decent report. After the first report was done, it became easier to report what followed... somehow.

But once your superiors believe that there exists a sentient slime, and that a slime is capable of speech, and that said slime is strong, and that monsters are being named in mass by a slime... after the superiors believe all that nonsense, the rest becomes easier.

For example, it was easier to report that the slime defeated an orc lord. That it was acknowledged by the dryads and became the chancellor of the west side of the forest... At least, at this point, the supervisors were allowing this report to reach the Celestial Empress. At least, at this point the spies weren't treated as mentally ill.

Then, the demon lord Milim took interest in the gathering of monsters. Funnily enough, the Celestial Empress herself filtered the information so that the archduke wouldn't hear about the little princess befriending the demon lord known as the Destroyer.

Meanwhile, the monsters developed a city. At a later date, it established formal relationships with the Armored Kingdom Dwargon.

Those were outrageous news. They were to be treated with utmost urgency. The fast development of the events made it necessary for the Dynasty's heads to decide what to do with the monster country, and the spies reports were essential for that. Fortunately, they were believed, not ignored nor sent to rest.

Then, the slime left the forest and met some humans. That's fine. Then, he fought Hinata, the protector of human kin. Somehow, he managed to get away, but they couldn't record the method as it happened inside a holy field.

After that, things became troublesome.

The war against the Falmuth Kingdom was a losing one for the monsters. They lost the initiative, and they were outnumbered. Still, the monsters won. Some spies managed to catch the dragonewts falling over a squadron of paladins or the holy knights getting burned by a kijin. Still, the most important front, the slime battling an army of 20k, was surrounded in mystery, as the spies didn't even get near when the anti-magic area was cast.

The slime became a demon lord. The spies planted around the forest reported this to their home country as soon as possible.

It became troublesome when the archduke Grimwald decided to visit the country personally. Well, it ended well since international relationships were formed.

The elven spies came to envy the monsters' growth a bit. They were clearly weaker a few days ago, but after Rimuru's evolution, they became stronger. Strong enough to fend against the army of Demon lord Clayman.

Later, news about the Octagram and the 'newbie' shook the world.

It was regrettable that the battle between the holy paladins and the monsters wasn't completely recorded. The magicule content in the air made it harder to take images from afar with magic. They did see from afar the monster army fighting the hundred holy knights. They did see the explosions from afar. But why did that hard headed Hinata Sakaguchi relinquish to the monsters... that still remains a secret from the information gathering team.

A few months later, the spies were busy inquiring about the country's security and reliability. It had to be gauged before the festival, where the Celestial Empress would attend.

The investigation took longer than expected as the technologies in the country were too new for the elves to understand a single glance. Just going to the toilet was revolutionary to the elves. Moreover, the food and the clothes were to be inspected carefully, as those all used monster parts as ingredients.

It ended well and the festival finished without an issue. The Empress seemed pleased, giving great joy to the spies.

The monster country kept growing. Now, even humans had high posts within the government.

The Easter Empire started to move. Their military was gathering. Knowing this, the elven spies did their best to estimate Tempest war potential. Using all the information gathered by the spies, the elven strategists predicted a close war...

It was completely out of charts that Tempest would have such an overwhelming victory against the empire. Moreover, the rumors within the monster's soldiers said that the massacre was carried out by a few executives. Not that the spies had any chance to see the battle.

When the spies were at their busiest, some left outside the labyrinth reported a fight between two dragons, probably true dragons. The poor spies retreated as soon as they could. That's why there is no information of how Tempest managed to emerge victorious out of that battle. It was assumed that the Storm Dragon won the skirmish.

The spies did their best during the Tenma War. There were some absent executives, which was swiftly reported.

Even after all those nonsensical wars ended, reporting from Tempest was still troublesome. At least, the elven spies were grateful that their superiors had open minds. If they reported how a remote image transmitting screen was made, they would be believed. If it was about rumors of a small and portable communication device working without magic, they would be believed. On the other hand, they would hear about the dwarven spies, who had a superior who refused to report to the king some nonsensical sounding inventions...

Just now, a report about an investigation of using waves to produce heat was sent to their home country. The elven spies didn't forget to add a note.

Even if it sounds like a dangerous weapon development investigation, following the pattern, we suspect that its use is for the citizens.

After finishing their tiring day, what better than to enjoy a bath with a good wine.
