'A heart that loves is always young'
-Greek proverbAurora was in Drew's room with Amelia and Stephanie. She didn't have anything to do so she decided to tag along with Amelia until she had a patient that needed surgery. Which Amelia didn't mind her tagging along.
"Drew Hawkins, in for a surgical resection of a butterfly glioma," Stephaine said.
"Can you see the light even a little?" Amelia asked moving a little flashlight between Drew's eyes.
"Nope. It's just black. Total blindness now for about a month. But I can still smell. What is that? Lilac Perfume and coconuts?"
"Lavender Shampoo"
"Yeah it's coconut shampoo," Aurora said.
"And why has Drew gone blind?"
Stephanie turned to look at Amelia. "The blindness in both eyes is caused by a lesion in the optic radiation"
"Nailed it. Dr. Lavender. Oh, can we show them the trick?"
"Sure," Amelia said grabbing a pen out of Aurora's coat pocket. "Catch!" Amelia said throwing the pen and Drew caught it.
"Oh, wow"
"Cool," Aurora said.
"Pretty fly for a blind guy, right?"
"How?"
"Drew has comical blindness. His eyes still see, but only the subconscious part of his brain receives the signals. Your subconscious saw the pen. Once I decompress the tumor, I may be able to free up the visual cortex, possibly restoring your sight" Amelia said.
"And maybe I'll see again?"
"Drew, we talked about this. I am gonna try for total resection, but at the very least, I will buy you time"
"I know, I know, but there's a chance?"
Amelia nods. "There's a chance"
🏥🏥🏥
Aurora was in the hospital chapel lighting a candle with Jo behind her.
"I didn't even know this place was here"
"Shh," Aurora said with her eyes closed.
"Okay, let's go," Jo said after a few seconds of silence.
"Shh"
Jo walked closer and stood beside Aurora and looked at her with a concerned face.
"I found it first. Their baby's problem" Aurora said taking a glance at Jo.
"I know, but that isn't"
"I wished horrible things for them, Jo. Because they seemed so happy and in every relationship I had ended bad and I guess I was jealous that they had something. I mean I wished them misery and fights and breakups. I mean, I'd see them sitting together in the Cafeteria, and I'd wished them food poisoning. Then I found this"
"You would never have wished them this. You know that" Jo said looking at Aurora. "If you hadn't have found it, somebody else would have. It wouldn't have changed anything. It's not on you. If anything, it just means that you're a good doctor"
Aurora nods. "Okay, if you say so" she mumbled and turned around to walk out the chapel.
🏥🏥🏥
Aurora was standing by the nurse's desk looking at some files on one of her patients when Amelia and Stephanie walked out of Drew's room.
"You did it. I... I mean, I knew you could do it" Stephanie said walking behind Amelia to the nurse's desk.
"Because it was"
"But you pulled it off!"
Amelia turned to face Stephanie. "And you said to stop. That's the difference. I know what it is to walk into a hospital O.R. with little or no chance or success, to do all of the planning and hoping and labor, knowing that in the end, it may amount to nothing it's impossible. But it is what is asked of us. And if you can't do it, if you aren't willing to keep looking for light, in the darkest of places without stopping even when it seems impossible, you will never succeed. What I am going next with Herman is much, much harder than this. I only need to be better, and I am gonna get there anyway I can. If you are not willing to do that, then you shouldn't be working with me. And you probably shouldn't be a surgeon. Understand?"
Aurora looked at Amelia as she said that and then watched Stephanie walk away, she then looked back at Amelia who felt eyes on her and looked at Aurora.
Aurora then looked away and looked back at the file she was looking at.
🏥🏥🏥
Aurora walked into the chapel and saw Amelia sitting in one of the pews, so Aurora walked to sit next to her. It was silence for a couple of seconds when Amelia broke the silence.
"My baby lived for 43 minutes"
Aurora looked at her and put her hand on top of Amelia's hand that was on her knee. Amelia looked at her hand and then looked to Aurora.
"I had a miscarriage a year ago, and I'm pregnant again and is probably gonna miscarry again" Aurora looking to front.
Amelia just stared at her shocked. "oh um who all knows?"
"Just you. But Meredith only knows I'm pregnant though"
Amelia sighed and put her head on Aurora's shoulder. "is there anything you can do the prevent you from miscarrying?"
Aurora put her head on top of Amelia's head. "no"
"You know you could have told be sooner"
"I know but I could you were already stressed and didn't want to put my problems on you"
Amelia picked up her head and looked at Autora. "Rory I don't care I want you to tell me your problems because I want to be here for you at all times"
Aurora smiled and looks back at Amelia. "thank you and I want you to tell me your problems to"
Amelia nods. "you're welcome, and you don't have to do that"
Aurora places her hand on her thigh. "I want to just like you want to for me"
Amelia smiles and puts her head back on Aurora's shoulder and placed her hand on top of Aurora's.
