"Thank you, miss..." I said softly, grateful for her understanding. I turned to look at Dean who gave me a sympathetic nod as he said, "Sorry about all that, but it was just a joke. I didn't know you'd take it so seriously."
"I can't believe she called us into the staff room over this..." Dean whispered to me as we walked back to class. "I thought you knew it was just juice."
I shot him a quick look and said, "I suspected it might be, but I thought I should play it safe and ask the teacher anyway just in case it wasn't."
Dean looked away and said, "Yeah, I guess you're right... I'm sorry I let it get so far, I just thought it was harmless fun."
I felt guilty and Dean tried to cheer me up by saying, "Don't worry, it was just a joke..." Dean mumbled as we continued to walk. He added, "I should have told you sooner, but I really didn't mean to cause any concern."
I stopped for a moment and turned around to look at him, feeling somewhat guilty about causing such a spectacle over a simple joke. I sighed and said, "It's alright, Dean. I know you didn't mean any harm, I guess I just got carried away."
Dean let out an apologetic smile and said, "Yeah, I'm sorry too... I didn't think it would go so wrong."
I sighed, feeling guilty and suddenly Dean nudged me softly and said, "Co'mon gloomy face, it's my fault too. I should have been honest too ."
I looked at him, unsure of what to say. I felt bad that he was beating himself up over it. "Yeah, maybe. But if we're being honest, I should have asked you first," I said softly.
Dean let out a nervous chuckle and said, "I guess that's true. I'm sorry."
I tried to make light of the situation by adding, "No more wine, okay?"
Dean smiled and agreed, saying, "Alright, no more wine. But, I can't wait to try some grape juice!"
I chuckled and asked, " Are you sure it is really grape juice this time?."
Dean gave me a light nudge and said, "yeah, yeah. No more jokes. Just juice from now on."
I laughed and said, "It's a deal!" As we continued to walk back to class, I felt the awkwardness of the situation begin to dissipate and a warm sense of friendliness return to our friendship.
As we returned to our seats after the commotion in the staffroom and took out our notebooks to resume the lesson we let out a deep breath and felt a sense of relief. We sat there for a moment, unsure of what to say to each other but feeling a sense of forgiveness between us.
As we exchanged glances, a smile slowly spread across both of our faces as we thought of the moment that happened. Though the moment had caused us some trouble, it was quickly forgotten in favor of remembering the good times where we had a great laugh.
Days passed, and we became good friends who were really close, yet I hated his pranks. I was someone who never took jokes seriously, and yeah, I was a kind of freak, loving every bit of rebellious activity that came my way.
There was one time when we could select newspaper copies which got delivered to the class. Some time ago, they used to give a fancy mask inside the paper, and my sister totally loved it for her personal collection. I always collected the newspapers for her, and despite having to pay extra, I still did it because it brought her a lot of joy. One day, I had returned from the rest room when I realised my newspaper had been distributed. I didn't bother to pick it up till after the last interval cause I was lazy and knew that it would still be there. Well, at least that's what I thought.
As I looked at the torn-out mask on my newspaper and realised I had just missed out on getting a beautiful fancy mask for my sister, I felt a wave of anger and annoyance wash over me. There was no way I could get that same mask now and the thought of it annoyed me. I turned to look around for the newspaper thief who had done this and vowed to get them back. I would find out who was responsible and make them pay for what they had done.
As I approached the group of "pick me girls" who were sitting by the stand, I could feel my anger slowly burning inside me. I hated that they were trying to deny knowing anything, when I knew they were hiding something.
I coldly questioned them about my mask as they all kept denying any responsibility. One of them blamed Dean for taking it.One of them even dared to snicker and raise her brow at me, which only made my emotions surge. I couldn't take it anymore and just wanted to find the culprit already so I could make them pay for what they had done.
With these thoughts swirling around in my head, my emotions and rage began to build up again. I had already questioned the girls as to who the culprit might be, but now I needed to find the person responsible. My mind had so many possibilities, one being Dean, who could just as well be the one to take my mask.
I was so focused on finding out who stole my mask that I had completely forgotten about Mr. Antonio's class.
Suddenly, Mr. Antonio came in and stopped me in the center of the classroom and asked where I was going after the bell had already rung.
As I looked over at Dean, who was still smiling at me and waving excitedly, I couldn't help but feel my rage grow even more.
It was at that moment that everything changed. The small mistake she would make, which she thought didn't matter, caused a chain reaction that altered the course of her life forever.
