I handed Dean my fountain pen, not realizing the chaos it would cause. As we sat in the front row, the class was already buzzing, but Dean was completely unfazed infact even maybe bored .His hands weren't trembling out of fear or anxiety, but simply because he was so not engrossed in what he was doing. He didn't care much for the mess, so as he absentmindedly shook the pen while writing, ink spilled all over the floor.
It didn't take long for Mrs. Shy to notice, and of course, she knew exactly who was responsible. Dean was right in front of the mess, after all. With all the trouble he's caused over the years, she didn't even ask. She just handed him a mop and told him to clean it up. I felt a twinge of guilt-it was my pen, after all, but Dean just took the blame without a second thought. It didn't help that Viola wasn't around to witness the chaos, either. On top of everything, we were about to hear our math results from Mrs. Shy, and I couldn't care less at that point. Math had never felt more stressful.
As I watched Dean cleaning the ink stain, I found myself lost in thought, feeling guilty for the mess. Then, the bell rang, snapping me back to reality. It was recess, and I tried to sneak out, but of course, Imay-Dean's closest friend and the unofficial Cupid of our class-stopped me. "So, you're just going to run away after putting him in trouble?" he teased. I smiled, feeling bad, and whispered, "Say sorry for me, please." I ducked under his arm-he was so tall-and hurried out, still carrying that nagging feeling of guilt with me.
Since Viola was absent today, I had a lot of time to drown in my thoughts. This class-it's the best class I've ever had throughout my school years. It's strange because, academically, it marked the start of my math grades going downhill, yet it was the best year. I couldn't help but reflect on what Viola had said to me before, about how I had a soft corner for Dean. *No, it couldn't be.* He's just a friend, someone who's fun to be around-cute, right? I don't know. I thought to myself, I'm not into him. Neither was I into Ray. I'm not going to fall for anyone-*what an irony.* I move on from boys within hours, even seconds, literally. So no, Dean? He's just my friend. A good friend. The one who understands me more than anyone else does. Wait... *what?*
I pretend to hate,
But in silence, truth echoes-
No one used to get me like him.
