The days were streaking by, but then one incident that abruptly shattered the routine.
Jake leaned in close, his voice low but laced with disrespect. “You think you’re tough, Dean? You’re just a joke.”
Dean’s expression darkened. “You should stop talking like that right now,” he warned, tension crackling in the air.
“Oh yeah? Why’s that?” Jake sneered, barely hiding his amusement. The sarcasm in Jake’s voice instantly transformed the environment—students around them paused, everyone knew that it was definitely a bad day for Jake.
In an instant, the air felt electric. Dean’s eyes narrowed, and without a second thought, he unleashed a swift punch that connected with Jake’s face. The impact echoed like thunder, causing gasps to ripple through the crowd. Blood erupted from Jake’s nose, the shock washing over him as he stumbled back, disbelief etched across his face.
Dean stood firm, not flinching as Jake clutched his face, his body language radiating raw intensity and fury. Before anyone could react, the PE teacher burst onto the scene, pulling Dean away and escorting him toward the principal's office. The whole hallway felt frozen in time, a thick cloud of shock hanging in the air. I was horrified.
''Dean! Why do you keep getting yourself in trouble.Oh god please save him!''I thought to myself
I couldn’t concentrate on anything in class afterward. My mind spiraled with questions—what had just happened? Why had he done that? Was he okay? What would come of this?
Viola, noticing my distress, leaned over. “Are you alright?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.
“It’s Dean,” I whispered, my heart racing. “He just punched Jake. They took him straight to the principal’s office.”
“Oh no.” Viola gasped, her eyes widening in alarm. “That’s terrible. Should we check on him?”
“I want to, but we can’t get into trouble, too,” I replied, glancing at the classroom door. “Let’s see if we can just sneak a peek.”
We quietly slipped out of class, moving like shadows, and cautiously approached the principal's office waiting area. Through the glass door, I spotted Dean sitting on a bench, his posture rigid, eyes fixed ahead. There was no sign of fear or regret—only a fierce intensity that seemed to emanate from him.wtf.
Our eyes locked, and I felt a rush of emotions—confusion, worry, and something else I couldn't quite place. I mouthed, "Why?" My heart was racing, and time seemed to stand still.
He responded with a slight shrug, defiance etched across his features. He didn’t look sorry at all, but his eyes alone told another story.
“He doesn’t look sorry,” Viola murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, her brows knit in confusion.
“No,” I replied, my stomach churning with apprehension. “He doesn’t.”
The bell rang, breaking the tension and signaling the end of class. “We have to go,” Viola urged, gently pulling me away from the doorway.
“God,” I murmured, reluctantly turning back to class.
As we walked away, Viola placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “This is serious, but I think he knows exactly what he did,” she said softly, the weight of her words sinking in.
“I just don’t know,” I confessed, my voice trembling with uncertainty. “He didn’t seem like he regretted it.”
What was going on in Dean’s head? The silence of that hallway echoed in my mind as I wrestled with a mix of fear and concern for my friend. Was he just a friend ?Part of me wanted to confront him and understand his actions, but another part worried that this moment was just the beginning of something horrible for Dean.
The afternoon dragged on, and the tension from the earlier incident still hung in the air like a thick fog. I kept glancing at the door of the principal’s office at each break, waiting for Dean to return. I half-expected him to walk in with a storm brewing behind his eyes, a whirlwind of anger and frustration that had seemingly erupted in the hallway.
When the door finally swung open, my heart leaped. Dean stepped out, his familiar grin plastered across his face, like he had just come from a celebratory gathering rather than a disciplinary meeting. He waved cheerfully at a few friends as he made his way down the hall, a casual bounce in his step that seemed almost out of place after the chaos of earlier.
"Hey!" he called out, flashing that trademark smile. But something was off. Although he looked cheerful, that usual spark— that fierce light in his eyes—had dimmed significantly, replaced by an unsettling void that stirred unease in my chest.
“Dean!” I called, rushing to catch up with him. “Are you... alright?”
He turned to me, the smile never wavering, but his eyes told a different story. They felt distant, as though he were present in body but drifting somewhere far away. “Yeah, I’m good,” he said, his voice bright yet somehow hollow.
“You really took Jake by surprise, But why” I pressed, half-heartedly trying to coax out the truth behind that vacant look.
Dean shrugged casually, dismissing the earlier incident as if it were nothing more than a minor mishap. “Just had to set some boundaries, you know? Can’t let people talk about you like that.”
His words bounced around in my head, but something felt...off. About me? I wanted to ask, but my voice kind of got stuck.
"M-me?" I finally managed, my heart doing a weird little flutter.
Dean just shrugged again, totally casual, and looked away.
"Yeah, you know, people talk, gotta teach me some manners." he mumbled.
“Relax!” he interrupted, laughter bubbling from his lips, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’m fine! Seriously!” He patted my shoulder playfully, as if to brush away any lingering worries.
I felt an unsettling knot twist in my stomach. “You sure? Because you don’t seem like—”
“I said I’m fine!” he snapped suddenly, his smile faltering for a split second. It was a flash of the intense storm I had witnessed earlier, but just as quickly, he masked it with that same bright grin. “Let’s just forget about it, okay?”
Before I could respond, he turned away and ran down the hallway, his footsteps echoing off the walls, but the urgency felt different now—a desperate attempt to shake something off rather than a carefree waltz.
Viola joined me as I stood there, my thoughts swirling. “What just happened?” she asked, a mixture of confusion and concern in her voice.
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “He’s acting like everything’s fine, but… I know that he’s not.”
“I think you need to talk to him,” she suggested.
“He’s pushing me away,” I said, feeling the weight of the moment. “But I can’t just let him go through this alone. Something's off, and he needs someone.”
As I started to move down the hallway to catch up with him, despite his cheerful facade, I couldn’t help but wonder what lay beneath, waiting to break free.
