Ash, Brock and Misty finally leave Cherrygrove City. While on their way to Violet City, Ash and Misty come across a Totodile and both of them attempt to catch the Pokémon.
The two have a contest until one of them catches the Totodile and Misty catches Totodile. Ash and Misty decide to battle so that they can start to train Totodile. Ash is defeated by Totodile.
When a crybaby Marill is washed away by a river following a failed attempt by Team Rocket to steal it, Misty tries returning the Marill to its trainer, Wilhomena. But Misty tries to keep the Marill for herself. Ash, Brock and Misty end up having to protect Marill from Team Rocket and send them flying off again.
Misty ends up giving up Marill to Willhomena believing it's the right option.
