Ash, Brock, Misty and Gary are on their way to the first gym when they run into another trio of people. These people include the returning Jimmy and his two friends Marina who has a Chikorita and Vincent who owns a Totodile. Marina seems to be infatuated by Ash while Jimmy finds Ash annoying. Ash challenges the three to a 1v1 so he can see how they have been in their journey.
Ash battles against all three and wins each fight with Ash giving each of them tips and tricks to be better trainers. The entire group decide to camp out for the night. Marina reveals that she grew up in an orphanage for most of her life as her parents ran it and she wants it to get renovated as the place is very run down. Marina plans on trying to catch every Pokémon in the world and prove Professor Elm is wrong and that there isn't just Kanto and Johto Pokémon. Vincent is a very strong trainer who wants to win the Pokémon league and this is where it's revealed that Jimmy and Vincent have signed up for the Johto League.
Ash, Brock, Misty and Gary decide to help out the orphanage and work at it for the week. Team Rocket, hearing about this, decide to attempt to steal all of the Pokémon at the orphanage. After helping out the orphanage, Ash, Brock, Misty and Gary fend off the Team Rocket trio who attempt to steal the Pokémon from the orphanage. Ash, Brock, Misty and Gary say goodbye to Jimmy, Marina and Vincent as Ash now has two rivals in Jimmy and Vincent.
