SYNPOSIS: Cadence Sinclair Eastman is part of a perfect, rich family called the Sinclairs, which includes her grandfather, her mother and two aunts and her cousins. Every summer, they all travel to her grandfather's private island. Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and Johnny's friend Gat (who accompanies them to the island every year) are an inseparable group of friends, called The Liars. During the summer of Cadence's 15th year, she has an accident which causes her to suffer debilitating headaches and amnesia, so she can't remember the details of what happened to her that summer. She sees herself as damaged and believes she no longer fits with her perfect family. To make matters worse, her family won't tell her the details of her accident. For the next two years after her accident, she is unable to visit the island and doesn't see or hear from the The Liars. During the summer of her seventeenth year, Cadence returns to the island and decides to learn the truth about what really happened to her.

Omg, okay, We Were Liars is quite an amazing book. Although, I do admit I didn't quite like the writing style. E. Lockhart tried to make it poetic but sometimes, it just came off as weird. That's the only thing I disliked about the book. But Cadence's headaches are described in a very unusual and fresh kind of way. The author describes the island in a way that's not confusing.

The characters are fresh, unusual and developed over the course of the book.

The story is told in a haunting series of events that just leave you breathless. With the fact that there's a big secret going on and then there's the shocking reveal at the end, the author does a great job stringing the reader along and giving just the tiniest bits of info that keep us interested. And the way What Really Happened is revealed at the end ... it takes your breath away. You're just like WHAT THE FRICK JUST HAPPENED? WAS THAT REAL? AM I HALLUCINATING?

I'm telling you. You don't see it coming. My sister claims she did but I was totally surprised. And heart-broken (refer to the top).
