Five
BLINDED TEMPORARILY by the lights, Warren squinted his eyes to adjust his sight. The moment he managed to open his eyes fully, he started roaming them around, and the image of the room quickly hit him with a sense of familiarity. Furthermore, the antiseptic smell of the strange room he's in gave him a slight nudge in the right direction.
"You're awake."
Warren turned his head in the direction of the voice, and his brown eyes landed on the man who saved him from almost getting kidnapped.
David saw right away the confusion in Warren's eyes, so he decided to fill him in with his current situation.
"You're at a hospital who has a close relationship with your family..." David sounded unsure.
Only one person came to Warren's mind. "Uncle Jacob?"
"Ewan, malay ko kung sino yun." Pilosopong sagot ni David na nagpangiwi kay Warren.
David pulled the chair that was near him and positioned it beside Warren's bed. He sat on the chair backwards, thighs parted, and forearms rested on the top rail of the furniture.
Itinagilid ni David ang kanyang ulo kaunti, at saka pinasadahan ng tingin si Warren. "Kumusta ang pakiramdam mo?"
David's question took Warren by surprise. To be honest, he's still confused why David is still with him—he's not the first person Warren was expecting to see after he passed out.
Warren thought David wouldn't even bother coming to the hospital. He thought David was just going to hand him over to Omar and let his assistant take care of the rest. Yet David is right in front of Warren, sitting very manly on the single chair, and asking Warren how he is.
The gesture was so unusual that it had Warren's mind reeling.
Apart from his dauntless personality that seems to rival my dominant side and his sharp tongue, I guess he still has a heart. Warren thought to himself.
"You look like you've seen a ghost," David said, a small grin dancing around his pink lips.
He leaned the side of his face against his hand and kept his gaze locked at Warren. "Didn't expect to see me here, didn't you?"
The playfulness in David's voice somehow sits right with Warren. Looking back, the last interaction they had didn't end well. The two of them were at each other's throats, and David made it clear to Warren that day that he hated Warren's guts.
However, what's in front of Warren right now was a whole different experience, and for some reason, he'd rather choose this than the other.
"Wait, did you actually think I was just going to dump you after saving you? Without even making sure that you're okay?" David looked offended.
He was just joking earlier, but he didn't actually think Warren would think of him that way.
"Bastard! I'm not that heartless!" He smacked Warren's leg that was under the sheet.
"Hey! Injured guy here, remember?" Warren whined in protest, and then he pointed at himself.
"Then stop being an airhead," David said with narrowed eyes.
That fucking nickname again! "Stop calling me that," Warren said with a glare.
David just rolled his eyes at him. "Whatever. Well? You still didn't answer my question."
"Yeah, uhm, could you hand me the remote for my bed first?" Warren asked with a slight bashful expression.
David turned to the table beside Warren's bed and grabbed the remote. Warren mumbled a silent thank you and adjusted his bed to a position that would make it easy for him to talk to David. Placing himself in a semi-Fowler position, Warren couldn't help the grimace that crossed his face when he tried moving a little bit.
