The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Response Poem

Lost in the woods, together with the branches of tree,
A boy who came, plaster a smile on his lips with glee,
"Come, boy. Come and play with me", said the tree,
Which were the last words spoken before their ties got broken.

Soon after, the boy ages and they parted ways,
Long enough to cover all the memories they had made,
But then one day, he came back with nothing but only,
Apology. Regrets. Sorrow. Pain. Love. And laughter.
But among all, "they live happily ever after".
