Of course you did not wait for him stuck in the one place.

Instead, you walked down the path, following the stream to a place where it flowed into a pond. A pond, on the surface lay lily pads with pink water lilies. The water was crystal clear and as you stepped to the edge, you could see the rocks on the bottom as if there was no water; only the occasional ripples on the surface really convinced one that there is water indeed, so clear it was to see through.

Long straws of reed grew round the majority of the pond, with a couple bare spaces on the grass where you could step right next to the water. Long dragonflies claimed the place as their own, flying all around, chasing after each other and resting on the narrow leaves of the reed. Dragonflies of cold blue and fierce red, and there was the croaks of frogs present, too, frogs hidden in the reed, or catching light between rocks on the shallow part of the pond.

You kneeled down to reach your hand into the water, moving it slowly across the water's surface.

“Fascinated by the pond, yeah?”

You jumped up and had the swift hand not caught your elbow, you'd be knee deep in the water already.

“Oh my! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to startle you,” the voice exclaimed, although with a chuckle. You turned to stare into Yu's eyes.

“You could've coughed or something. What are you doing here, moving like a spy so that I wouldn't notice?”

“I didn't mean to intrude nor make you fall, believe me,” he laughed again his hearty laugh and you couldn't resist but smile, too. He raised his hand to tame a strand of his long hair which came flying wildly across his eyes as wind picked up slightly.

“It's okay,” you said in between your own laughing into which turned the original smile.

He still held you with his hand, so he quickly pulled you away from the water and let go as you both became aware of the close proximity. His icy blue eyes avoided yours.

“Anyway,” you cleared your throat awkwardly, “how'd you find me?” You didn't mean to make it sound as if you didn't want Yu to find you, as if you meant to be alone with Masashi, even though that boy was gone and nowhere to be found, and accused the longer haired boy of interrupting; but it came out close to that. “I mean- how did you know Masashi would take me to the gardens?”

“I waited in the library, but it didn't take me long to figure out you aren't coming; from then, it was just luck finding you here.”

Your cheeks burned with embarrassment. “I'm sorry,” you said abashedly and this time it were your eyes which refused to meet his as you looked down at your feet. Or rather, your skirts, since you could not see your feet hidden in them. “I wanted to go back and tell you, but he wouldn't listen.”

“I know it's not your fault, ” he assured you with a smile, voice soft. The cold ice in his eyes filled you with warmth and melted away the embrassment and guilt; his eyes were, despite the freezing color, looking at you gently and carefully. Then, so quietly he mumbled to himself that you didn't hear, “he really means to keep you only to himself, huh? Well, two can play this game.”

“What?”

His head jerked back slightly and his eyes focused in on you again. “Oh, I was just wondering...” he trailed off, looking to the side.

“About what?” you pressed.

The pale haired boy turned around and began walking, motioning for you to follow. As you fell into stride with him, you had to crane your neck all the way up to look into his face for so tall he was; he needed to bent his head all the way down to look at you. With Masashi, you could simply look up with your eyes; with Yu, you needed to turn your whole face up to meet his gaze.
