Eleven: "We're just visitors."
------
Luke.
"Fucking hell, why does the weekend ever end?!" Michael groaned, throwing his game controller away as he laid face first on Luke's bed.
"Hey, don't swear," Ashton chided from the foot of the bed, swatting at Michael's leg without removing his eyes from the screen.
Michael and Ashton were in Luke's room, spending the Sunday, just laying around their house (or more specifically the house of the family the boys had been assigned to stay with) playing video games and binging on fast food.
Luke was glad that the family were such nice people. They were a couple in the early sixties, and both of their kids were married with families of their own so they lived alone in the huge house and could easily house foreign exchange students. And so Luke, Ashton and Mike all stayed here in separate rooms and walked the short distance to school everyday.
Luke turned off the telly as the game over flashed on the screen and Ashton cheered at his victory.
"We have to go back to Australia in two months," Luke said suddenly, and Mike made a sound of acknowledgement.
"Yeah, we know. What's up Luke?" Ashton asked, turning towards the blonde who sighed, shaking his head.
"It's really stupid. I--"
"Yeah yeah. You're going to miss Louis and his everything else and it's tearing you up inside even though the bastard is not even interested," Michael said, diving towards the pile of packets of foods and pulling out a Doritos packet.
Luke blushed. "Not true! I mean yeah I think I'll kinda miss him and oh God this wasn't supposed to happen!" He groaned.
"You know what I'll miss about England? These," Michael said, waving a packet of Jammy Dodgers in Luke's face.
Ashton patted his knee. "Hey it's alright. Crushes come and go, and you'll forget them once we get to school back home. Stop thinking Luke, you'll have to leave it all in the end anyway," Ashton added softly, and Luke sighed, knowing he was right.
He was acting like a heartbroken thirteen year old, and honestly he was weirded out with himself. His crushes normally don't get this intense.
"What about you Ash? Aren't you going to miss Gemma?"
Ashton shrugged, biting his lip. "Yeah I will. She's really awesome but yeah. We gotta leave soon so," he trailed off.
"Yeah mate. You guys know me. I'm treating this stay like we all should. Like a tourist," Mike shrugged, cradling the crisps bag in his lap as he dug into it.
He chewed, and then continued. "Just make friends temporarily and for your own use, and indulge in flings my friends. Sample the British."
And Luke knew Michael was absolutely right. But Luke is a right idiot so he let the stupid hormones go this far.
----
Luke was taking his books out for his mandatory short course English class on Monday morning, humming to himself. He felt much better than he was yesterday, probably because he forced himself to realise that it would be no use crushing on Louis one-sidedly and if on the off chance that anything did happen, he was going to leave in less than two months. He was just a visitor here.
"Hey Luke?" The boy turned his attention away from the locker and towards a petite spectacled girl with a clipboard.
"Hi."
She tucked a stray strand of straight blonde hair behind her hair, and smiled brightly. "Hey, I'm Paris. Can you, uh, sign this petition? I'm from Art class, and it's for letting us design our own lockers. It's pretty stupid but yeah," she shrugged sheepishly and Luke chuckled, accepting her clipboard and pencil.
"It's pretty brilliant actually. Who likes to see bland grey lockers every morning, right?" Luke said with a nose scrunch, and Paris laughed in agreement as Luke signed his name on the sheet.
"Thanks Luke."
"Yeah no problem. " He looked up to hand the girl back her clipboard, but froze when his eyes fell on Louis standing just a few lockers down, who was casually leaning against his locker, talking to the same buff boy-- Liam. The boy said something, making Louis' eyes crinkle up as he laughed heartily, making Luke's breath catch for just a millisecond.
The blonde didn't even have time to blink when Liam boldly moved forward, leaning down and kissing Louis square on the mouth, who looked a bit stunned and Liam looked flustered as he moved back. But then Louis seemed to snap out of it in seconds, pulling Liam close with a hand on the back of the lad's neck and kissing him again as everyone looked on, including Luke who was still frozen with a weird, uncomfortable feeling growing in his chest.
"Um, Luke?"
Luke blinked in shock, looking down at the pencil clenched in his hands, now snapped in two, both halves still in his hands. He apologized to Paris, digging in his bag and handing her his own pencil as she chuckled in amusement.
"You should tell him, you know? You should have a while ago," Paris said, meeting her grey eyes with Luke's.
"Huh?"
The girl rolled her eyes, tapping her clipboard. "I'm not a bimbo, I can see it in your face, bro. Seeing Louis Tomlinson kissing his boyfriend is crushing you," she tutted, and Luke almost snorted at the word.
"Boyfriend?" The word escaped out his mouth on his own accord.
"Um, yeah," Paris smiled sympathetically. "I heard they got together on the weekend," she said quickly, shrugging.
They seemed poles apart to Luke, and not in a good opposites attract way. But what does he know? He doesn't even know Louis and Liam well apart from what he's heard around. And he's heard a lot about Liam's size down there, as much as he didn't want to know and why is Luke even thinking about Liam and Louis?!
"Right. Okay. But how do you know that I- I mean Louis-"
"I volunteer from Art class and been working on the set alongside you guys for a week. I tend to pick up on stuff," Paris said non-chalantly, making Luke raise an eyebrow. Wow, he really can't notice anything but Louis while in Drama class.
"Thanks for your signature though. And good luck for everything. See you around Luke," Paris mock-saluted, then flitted away as Luke thought about her words.
"Yo, Malik!" Paris called, catching up to and jumping on the back of the same tan boy from the auditorium-- Zayn-- who hoisted her up almost naturally, chuckling as she messily kissed his cheek. Wow, that's cute.
Luke didn't even know if they were together, but he felt oddly relieved at the thought. Oh God.
Cutting his attention away from them and back to Louis and Liam who had now disappeared, Luke had an overwhelming urge to bang his head against the not-for-long bland grey lockers at his reaction. What was wrong with him?
