Twelve: "Barely even friends."------
Louis.
He sat in his first period English class, tapping his pencil against his desk absent-mindedly as he frowned at the test laid in front of him. He hadn't bothered reading the poems their teacher had assigned. What was the use? He loved plays, not poems. Much. And also, Louis had been in no mood to do homework or study last night, all his time occupied with the cutie sitting next to him right now, and Louis didn't mind that one bit.
"Lou," Liam whispered from the seat next to him, and Louis inclined his head a smidge.
"What did you get for 19?" He whispered.
"The hell if I know. Just pick one," Louis shrugged as Liam chuckled softly, Louis saying fuck it and marking random answers. He was glad this was just a practice quiz and won't affect much on his grades.
Louis lifted his head up and gazed at Liam, who was liesurely lounged in his desk, looking mighty hot, ticking one answer after the other with a cute little crease between his brows. Liam hadn't studied either as both of them had practically spent the weekend at each other's house after they had gotten together, right after their first date.
Liam had taken him on a date over the weekend like Louis had asked, at it had been fun. Liam had been a flustered mess at the start, and it was adorable but Louis had been slightly annoyed by Liam's constant nervous ramblimg. A few hours into their night though, Liam had began to gain confidence, bantering and flirting with Louis, which transitioned to subtle touches during the movies they were watching, and which eventually lead to heavy snogging.
And it wasn't like the usual kissing too, Louis had noted. It felt a bit more, and quite less monotonous and empty than the meaningless kisses he had engaged in before. There was something there. He did feel something for Liam, more than the fondness for his shyness and cute smile and confused puppy look and not to mention his killer body and his sweet nature.
Louis didn't actually kiss on first dates, but somehow that thought had went out the window as soon as he'd felt Liam's intense gaze on him in the cinema, and seconds later he was halfway in Liam's lap, not even minding the hand rest between the seats digging into his spine.
They had walked home hand in hand, not talking much, just sharing small smiles. And Louis had wanted to talk, but couldn't decide what to say. It felt weird. Him not having any idea what to say.
And so Louis had decided that this moment was one of comfortable silence, just holding Liam's hand and kissing him goodbye as they had reached his house, where Liam had shyly asked him to be his boyfriend on his porch steps, his face pouting and hopeful and so endearing in the dim porch light, lightly squeezing their entwined hands.
Louis had frozen for a few seconds, thinking about it. Liam's presence did make him happy, he really did. Louis' friends were on his back, wanting him to stop moping around and he knew they meant well.
And well.. he really did want to try, see where this goes. And he likes Liam too. That's a notable point.
And so Louis had said yes to Liam who had almost squealed-- yes, a mature football player on their school's team squealed like a little girl, kissing him again happily.
And so now him and Liam were an item, Louis guessed, and it honestly felt good, having someone just be there again, and getting to call them yours in a way. Louis liked that.
Liam looked up and met his eyes with a small smile. "Pass this test, and I might kiss you again like I just did in the hallway," he said teasingly, making Louis' heart beat faster because yeah, he just found out that he really liked being kissed in public. And also really liked it when Liam took charge like that.
Hiding his small blush, Louis quickly focused on his test, trying hard for the first time since he was given the question paper.
The classroom door opened and the teacher's voice cut in through Louis' concentration. "Mr. Hemmings. Nice of you to join us," he said snarkily, and Louis' head snapped up, his eyes locking with Luke who has staring straight at him with a blank expression. Their locked gaze lasted for about a second before Luke turned back to the teacher.
"Sorry. Had to take a personal call," he said, accepting the question paper and sidling to his desk at the back, plopping down next to his spectacled friend.
A few seconds later, Louis focused back on his test, Liam's promise lingering fresh in his mind.
----
"Payno! I got a C!" Louis said enthusiastically as the class was dismissed and everyone was collecting their papers from the teacher's desk and exiting.
Liam smiled, huffing as an eccentric Louis jumped at him, wrapping his arms around his neck. "You know what that means," he whispered, brushing his nose against Liam's who chuckled, leaning down and kissing the smaller boy, right outside their class.
"Ew! PDA!" He heard someone whine right next to him, making him groan and Liam chuckle as he slowly unwrapped his arms from Liam's neck, giving Gemma an unamused look as Liam, ever the gentleman politely greeted her.
"I'll see you at lunch," Liam said, pecking the corner of his mouth as he went to meet up with his teammates standing in the corner.
Gemma grabbed Louis' arm. "Don't look now but Aussie boy was staring at you two."
Louis raised an eyebrow. "So? Speaking of which, I gotta talk to him," he added as an afterthought, nodding at a frowning Gemma as he caught up to Luke.
"Hey, Luke!" Louis called out as he found him near their lockers, making the taller boy freeze as he slowly turned around.
"Hey," Luke nodded, looking ahead.
Louis ran a hand through his fringe. "Um. Just wanted to remind you that rehearsals got moved to the evening shift."
Luke nodded. "Yeah Louis, I know. I read the notice board too you know," Luke said curtly, making Louis narrow his eyes.
"How was I s'posed to know? I was just being nice, you don't have to be bitchy about it," Louis scowled, making Luke sigh.
"I- yeah. I'm sorry. See you around Louis," Luke nodded, hiking his backpack up his shoulder as he turned to leave.
"Did I do something?" Louis blurted out, and Luke frowned.
"Um no?"
"I don't know. I mean where are the smartass comments? The nosing around? I'm waiting actually," Louis said, smirking lightly, his eyes widening as he realised what he said as Luke smiled, cocking his head to the side adorably.
"I mean not that I missed then over the weekend but yeah," Louis chuckled, adjusting his beanie as he felt his cheeks heat up. God, why is blushing so much today?
"Oh. Interesting weekend we all had, huh?" Luke said with a snort, then changed the subject.
"And despite what we might say, we're barely even friends Louis so I don't feel bad," Luke shrugged his broad shoulders, smiling softly at a frowning Louis. He then instantly disappeared into the crowd as Louis leaned against his locker with a huff.
Yeah. They were barely friends. But Luke had never acted this coldly towards him. After the test, he didn't even glance once in Louis' direction, when usually Luke more than once shoots him a cheeky smile. He had always been teasing and pushing his buttons ever since they met and Louis wondered if something had happened to make him upset.
Because only people who are upset visit that abandoned house, just like he does.
And surprisingly, it was bugging Louis how the blonde was acting today, when it shouldn't even concern him. But it did. Because yeah, Luke was maybe kinda his friend.
