Thirteen: "Why are you ignoring me?"

-------

Luke.

Today, Luke finally decided to spend a while at the abandoned house to calm his mind, as it is his safe haven, along with someone else's. He had been putting off the visit for fear that he'd run into Louis. He know he was over-reacting, but he was also doing this for his own good.

Luke was jealous. Insanely jealous of Liam and when he saw him and Louis always together. Luke knew it was wrong of him to think like that, immature and petty actually. He's not even going to be around Louis in a few weeks and Liam was just the nicest bloke ever; it was impossible to hate him.

But the thing was-- that made Luke feel less guilty about not wanting them together-- was that he could see Louis wasn't really happy with Liam, the way he's seen him around his friends. Maybe it was just him, but Luke swore that Louis quite frequently fakes smiles. And Luke can tell because it's quite hard to replicate Louis' honest crinkled eyed smile, even for Louis himself.

But Luke tried his best not to delve into it. He just interacted with Louis in Drama class. Avoided him outside the auditorium: in the hallways, parking lot, cafeteria.

Which was of course making Louis a lot more suspicious but Luke didn't care. He had long given up on his persue Louis plan of course because one, Louis was taken and two, Luke was going to leave soon.

He still didn't understand why him ignoring Louis was bugging the lad so much. Louis doesn't give anyone who ignores him the time of day. It made Luke hope for something else but he suppresses it every time.

Luke closed his eyes, the gentle breeze combing through his hair as he idly dangled his legs while perched on the broken windowsill, the cool wood calloused under his palms.

His thoughts bounced back and forth between his impending trip back hope to the people he's going to miss in England. Most probably only one.

Luke cracked his eyes open as he heard rustling behind him. Please don't be a ghost or Louis, he chanted.

"Luke!" Louis' tenory voice cut in. "So I finally caught you, wow," he said sarcastically, and Luke didn't answer.

"Why were you ignoring me?" Louis accused with narrowed eyes, and Luke just scoffed, looking away and focusing back on the wide weedy field in front of them.

"Was it something I said?" Louis asked, softer now, and his tone reminded Luke of a guilty kitten and it was tugging at his heart.

Luke sighed, looking up from his hands and locking their blue gazes. "Why do you care so much?"

Louis blinked. "Well won't you want to know why some normal guy starts acting weird and instantly stops talking to you?" He huffed, and Luke smiled humorlessly.

"No Louis. You didn't do anything wrong. But I still don't get why you're so pissed?" Luke narrowed his eyes playfully, and Louis shrugged.

"Like I said. I don't like when someone has a stick up their arse," Louis said coolly.

"I don't have a stick up my arse! Don't you get that I don't want to talk to you all the time?!" Luke shot back, his voice a bit too loud for the place, and his own tone shocked him.

"And that is precisely what I want to know. Why," Louis said, sickly sweet smile in place as he was now sat next to Luke on the sill.

Yeah. Because I'm jealous of your boyfriend and want to be with you but you don't even see me that way and also I don't want to hurt you because I leave real soon.

If only he could open his stupid mouth and say it. Sure, it would have gotten messy but hey the truth would have been out then, yeah?

And Luke was slowly starting to feel pissed and frustrated. He thought Louis actually didn't care much. They had became friends merely a few weeks ago. But Louis was taking this a bit seriously, Luke's behavior, and he honestly didn't know what to think about it. Be happy or frustrated, probably.

"Why the hell do you care so much? We are barely friends--"

"I accept you as my friend okay?! I feel comfortable around you! So shut the fuck about the barely friends shit and tell me what's been up your ass the past few weeks!" Louis bellowed, so close to Luke he could smell the older boy's fruity soapy smell. He knew Louis didn't seem like the cologne kinda guy. Focus!

Luke blinked, furious blue grey eyes staring into his as his mind jogged over Louis' words. He actually considers him a good friend and wow Louis cursing was really hot.

"I kind feel comfortable around you too, Louis," Luke moved back a tad and gave him a sideways smile. And fūck, now he was really rethinking the whole ignoring and pushing away thing.

Louis was smiling softly as well, looking at his shoes.

"And sorry for um, avoiding you and making you feel that way. I have a weird way of dealing with stuff," Luke shrugged.

"It's cool," Louis nodded, fiddling with the oversized sleeve of his pink and blue hoodie. "Mind telling me dealing with what?"

"Mind telling me why you come here to clear your head?" Luke shot back with a small smirk, making Louis scowl.

"Touché."

A silence lapsed between the two, as they were deep in their thoughts. Luke apologized, and he kinda was sorry. Maybe ignoring Louis won't solve anything. Nothing will.

"How are you and Liam?" Luke blurted.

"Uh, we're good. Why?" Louis frowned.

"Just asking. Good for you Louis," Luke nodded, ignoring the heavy feeling in his chest. He smothered it down.

"Still surprises me how you even landed a guy who can stand you," Luke teased with a half smile, which widened when Louis gave out a loud chuckle, that precious crinkly eyed smile appearing and Luke could only stare from up close like a fool.

"I missed those smartass remarks!" Louis crowed, clapping dramatically, and Luke smiled wider, his dimple appearing.

"Yeah. I like this friendship thing. Banter. And all. That's why I was antsy because I missed those and whoa I'm weird," Louis whistled.

"So you missed me?" Luke poked, and Louis snorted.

"Hell no."

"Why? Doesn't Liam banter with you, hedgehog?" Luke raised an eyebrow and Louis pointed a finger at him.

"I'm not a hedgehog and-- don't touch my hair! And yes, I banter with everyone!" Louis shrugged, hopping off the sill.

"Really now?" Luke turned around as Louis leaned against the banister inside.

Louis smiled at him. "Yeah. But I don't have this much fun with everyone," he said shyly, eyes locking with Luke's for a second too long as his breath caught.

"Wait, so you just came here to talk to me or to your safe place?"

Louis shrugged. "Both I guess."

"You feel okay then? I kinda cockblocked again," Luke chuckled and so did Louis.

"Yeah I do. I feel pretty damn calm," Louis nodded, smiling that hedgehog smile again and Luke swore he was about to fall from this damn windowsill.

And okay. Forget Liam. The friends thing is okay. It's awesome. It's much better than okay. And it's on. Because he only has a month here until when he maybe returns next year, and Luke might as well spend it making Louis smile genuinely.
