TWELVE

I lay beside Beth in her twin size bed. She's been a mess about her mother almost attacking her then her mother getting shot right in front of her.

Maggie asked me to stay with her while she looks for their dad.

"You don't have to babysit me," Beth states, turning to look at me.

"I know. I just know how it feels to lose a parent in the worst way possible. It sucks," I tell her.

"What happened?" She asks softly.

Remembering how my father died is traumatizing all over again. He sacrificed his soul to save me. I had been close to death when he made the deal. My life for his.

I'll never forgive myself for allowing that to happen. I should have stayed home like Dean told me to. I just didn't want to miss finally getting the yellow eyed demon. We had been working so hard to find him.

"I was stupid and didn't listen to my brothers," I wince at admitting that out loud.

"You didn't listen to your brothers?" she teasingly gasps and covers her mouth in shock.

"Oh hush, do you want to hear the story or not?" I ask, playfully pushing her shoulder.

"Yes," Beth says with a small giggle.

"We were on a hunting trip and similar to Carl, I got shot," actually stabbed but that would be confusing for her, "I was about to get shot again but my dad stepped in front of me and the man took his life instead."

"Why was the man shooting you to begin with?" she asks, frowning.

"We trespassed on his property," I answer quickly.

I didn't want to expose Beth to the horror that was my life. Dead people walking around is crazy enough for her. I don't know if she can take anymore supernatural. The truth of my dad basically selling his soul is hard enough without me saying the words out loud.

"Did you follow your brothers on the hunting trip?"

"Yeah. It was supposed to just be a guys trip but I didn't want to stay home alone."

"I don't like being alone either," she says quietly.

"My childhood was lonely even though I had those two idiots," I say with a sigh.

"I had a great family until the apocalypse happened and took away my mom and brother."

"I know that happened to a lot of people. I got lucky that the three of us are still here," I admit.

"I still have my dad and Maggie. Losing my brother and mom at the beginning was crazy. I see now that it was so wrong for my dad keeping them in the barn. It's only made things worse," Beth explains.

"We've both lost a parent in a terrible way," I say in almost a whisper.

I know she heard me because she wraps her arm around my waist and leans her head against my chest.

"Winchester

"Winchester."

"Dixon."

"Come here," his husky voice allures me to him.

"What can I do for you, handsome?" I ask, pressing a light kiss to his cheek.

"Care to go hunting with me?" He asks, trying to ignore the affection I just showed him.

"Eleanor! Hershel went into town so i'm going with Rick to find him," I hear Dean holler from behind me.

"I'd love to," I answer Daryl before turning around to face my brother, "Take Sam!"

I hate the idea of all three of us being separated. It's not normal for it.

"Not enough room!" Dean calls back and walks away before I have the chance to answer.

"You gonna tell him you're coming with me?" Daryl asks from behind me.

"I'll tell Sam," I respond, turning to look back at Daryl.

"Meet me in an hour at my tent," he says, brushing his thumb against my cheek.

I nod in response. Even the smallest act of affection can leave me speechless when it comes to Daryl Dixon.

I head towards the Impala, wanting to grab more knives for the hunting trip. Guns are not smart to use when it comes to walkers since it only attracts more. I have always relied heavily on knives. Especially the one that kills demons. That knife is my favorite. Before the apocalypse, most of our guns were filled with salt anyway. Luckily, Bobby had stashes of shotguns that he left behind.

A hand covers my mouth and an arm is wrapped around my waist as Im jerked away from my destination.

I barely have time to process what's happening to me before I'm carried into the barn that held over a dozen walkers. It still reeked of the dead smell, making me want to gag against the hand that held me.

Where was everyone when I was being dragged away against my will?

Finally, I can see my attacker. No surprise. Shane Walsh. He's really lost his fucking mind.

He's pushed me against the wall now, his body pressed against mine and his hand still covering my mouth. He has a crazy look in his eyes.

Before his hand can even begin touching any part of me, his body his off of mine and Sam has him pinned against the wall.

I sigh in relief that Sam was close by and shut my eyes. I need a minute to calm myself down. I know my heartbeat is going too fast.

"If you ever lay your hands on my sister again, you will lose them," Sam threatens Shane.

I hear Shane's laugh, "we were just having some fun."

There's a silence then a scream. I peak over to see that Sam had cut off two of Shane's fingers. It's not the worse I have seen my older brother do.

"You're fucking crazy! Your entire family is crazy!" Shane yells at us before running out of the barn. Blood trails behind his footsteps.

I immediately move into Sam's arms and he embraces me tightly.

"Thank you," I mumble.

"I'll always have your back."
