"No, Emma, and that's final."
"You cannot ask me to stand by and do nothing!"
"I'm not asking you to do nothing. I'm asking you to stay safe, to keep our children safe."
Emmalide glanced at the twins, fast asleep. Days old. "But you can run off and do whatever."
Eustace gently wrapped his arm around her. "They can live without me."
"But what about me?" Emmalide snapped at him.
Eustace's face fell, and he gently cupped her cheek. "I will do everything I can to stay alive. But we need as many people as possible in this revolution. The more there are, the harder it will be for her to kill everyone."
Emmalide glanced out the window.
Overnight, the world had changed. Bonfires blazed 24/7, with everyone burning their record books. No record books meant storeowners couldn't get paid, so stores had closed. Draconia's banners had been vandalized, red slashes across the dragon iconography. And yet, the guards were at an all-time low.
Draconia's paranoia had set her up for failure.
"Then you can't ask me to stand by either."
Eustace was quiet, and slowly he reached into the cradle to touch Era-Evana's cheek.
"You and Elianore." Emmalide huffed. "I'm stronger than you, Eustace. You don't need to protect me."
"I know that. And it's not fair of me to ask you to stand down when I won't. But these two..." His hand moved to Eli-Evansi. "They are our hope. Our future. I want to create a world for them."
"Then let us create a world for them. Where they have both of their parents, and where they can be free."
Elivansi yawned. Eustace felt his heart sink. "A world we never had."
Emmalide smiled. "Your parents would be proud."
A knock on the door jolted both of them out of the conversation.
"And your parents are here." Eustace stood up quickly. "Notch, they took that 'give us three days with the babies alone' extremely literally."
"Can you blame them? How many people live to see their grandchildren." Emmalide walked to the front door, and opened it as quietly as she could.
"Mom, be quiet, I swear to Notch, I just got them to sleep."
"Not even a hello?" Excees teased, in a low whisper.
She walked in, and immediately cooed at the sight of her grandchildren. "Aw sweet babies..." she turned to Emmalide. "And my sweet baby. How are you doing?"
"Tired. They are exhausting."
Excees hugged Emmalide gently. "It's a good thing they've got you for a mother. My strong girl."
Eris stepped in slowly, nodding to Eustace as he did. He was even more stoic than usual, but the bags under his eyes betrayed him.
"Dad..." Emmalide ran into a full-bodied hug.
Eris hesitated, but only for a moment, before he returned the hug. "I'm fine, kiddo. Just tired. I got one kid giving me two grandkids, and one kid starting a damn war. It's been a rough few weeks."
"You don't actually believe Elianore betrayed Draconia, do you?" Emmalide wrinkled up her forehead. "I know everyone else does but...we know him. It's probably some crazy misunderstanding."
"Do we really know him?" Eris sounded as tired as he looked.
Excees folded her arms. "Ever since that Enear girl...he was different. And we hardly ever saw him after he moved out. And his temper..."
Emmalide glanced at Eustace. Elianore's last words to her had been a specific warning against joining the revolution. There was no way. Not her brother.
"But enough of that. I want to see these beautiful babies of yours."
"Mom, they are not beautiful. They are fresh."
"Oh, nonsense. All babies are beautiful, if a little odd-looking."
Eris snorted. "I dunno, Excees, if they look anything like Emma did..."
"Oh shush, Emma was the cutest baby I ever saw."
Eris cracked the slightest of smiles before whispering to Emmalide, "No, you were an ugly newborn. Your mother was a hormonal mess."
Emmalide barely stifled her own laughter as her mother cooed over the babies.
"What did you name them?"
"The girl is Era-Evana, and the boy is Eli-Evansi. After Eustace's parents."
"Oh, you gave them two names!" Excees cooed.
"Well, they'll probably be called Eravana and Elivansi, to dodge the whole bullying situation me and Elianore had. But yeah."
"Eli." Eris murmured.
Eustace nodded. "That part was after Elianore. I liked the thought behind it. Our love is not lessened just because it's familial."
Eris smiled. "You know he'd probably blow something if he knew."
"Oh, I know." Emmalide sighed. "He never even got picked on for it, lucky bastard. I don't know why he hates it so much. I think it's sweet."
"I'm sure if he found the right girl he'd let her call him 'Eli.' He's such a sucker for nicknames. Remember his friend Emery? Always called him 'Eme.'"
Eustace gave Emmalide a look before mouthing, or the right guy.
Emmalide had to bite her tongue to keep from laughing out loud.
Excees finally smiled proudly. "Alright, I'll get out of your hair and let you get some rest. Just holler if you need some help, I'll bring dinner and clean your house and babysit all at once. And your father..." she waved vaguely at Eris. "Well, he can stand there and pipe up with a good joke, and then teach the kids how to cuss."
"Hey, I did a fantastic job taking care of Enore and Emma."
"Ah yes, because murdering someone in the middle of the grocery store is great parenting..."
"I'm telling you, he was trying to kidnap Elianore!"
"He was a completely innocent man and you got his guts all over the store. For no reason."
"Oh, I had reason."
The argument continued as they walked out the door.
Emmalide sighed and collapsed on the couch. "Parents, man. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em."
Eustace snickered. "And you wonder why your brother never visited."
Emmalide sat up. "I want him to come home. I want him to see our kids. I want him to see a world where he can leave his house, live a fulfilling life, have a job, a role. You're not going to stop me from helping the revolution."
Eustace sighed and settled onto the couch as well. "As long as he doesn't kill me when he comes back." He smiled at the cradle. "I want to see his reaction to Elivansi."

A/n: ah look. The end is in shambles. Again/Still.
Also hi Blossom.
How's it going.
How's it feel to inspire me to drop two chapters in one night.
I mean sureee this one's just a side story. But honestly who cares. It's here, so obviously it's vital to the plot.
Anyway
As always, thank you for reading, please remember to vote, comment, and share, and I'll see y'all soon!
