Before the storm

Kenechukwu Orji ✨

It was 1am in the morning and I was up. 2 am, I was still up. 3:45, I was up.

What was wrong with me?

Kamsi, who was beside me, cried for an hour straight.
It was that day again. The day her parents died. The day she lost it all.

After she cried and I managed to comfort her, I could not sleep, too.

I began to wonder, what actually went on in that head of hers. I wanted to know if on some days she considered ending it all.

I know she loves mum, but are they days she misses her mother? Are there days she wishes she'd died along side them?

I sighed. Exams were in three weeks. I wasn't ready. Yes, my CA is wonderful, but there are some things that still need my attention in my books.

The room we all lay in was littered with teenagers. Just bodies and bodies everywhere.

I heard a noise and my eyes snapped open. There came Harmonie, crawling to me in the dark.

"Hey," she whispered to me.

I noticed her voice was deep and scratchy. Her eyes were red and she had salaiva on the side of her mouth.

She looked beautiful. Always.

"Hey." I whispered back.

"Why are you up?" I whispered.

"Why are you up?" She also asked.

"I asked first." I stated smugly.

She rolled her eyes.
"Couldn't sleep."

I sighed. "I'm worried about Kamsi."

She nodded. "I can tell."
An amused smile came to her face as she looked at me.
"Can you tell me though, why Kamsi hates me so much?"
She asked.

There was a smile in her face as she looked at me and I was so tempted to ask what was so funny, but I let it be. For it had been a while I saw that genuine smile on her face.

"Omo, Rich people have dealt with us in this life. They've made us suffer. That's probably the grudge she has against you. But I'm sorry on her behalf."
I said kindly to her.

She smiled again. "Ujunwa is rich too. Perhaps she thinks I'm trying to steak you away?" She asked.

That was when it occurred to me that Kamsi was jealous.
She was jealous of the bond I and Harmonie were forming.
She was actually jealous.

I looked at her and began laughing and she joined me, both of us using our hands to muffle the laughter coming from our mouths.

"How's your mum?" She suddenly asked softly.

I felt my self actually falling for her.

"My mum's alright. Thank you for asking." I replied to her kind eyes.

We sat silent for the rest of sun rise. I wish I knew that was just the calm before the storm.
