They still hadn't found his mother.

Blaze paced back and forth, his frustration mounting with each passing second. His mother was supposed to be back ages ago, but there was no sign of her anywhere. It was like she had vanished into thin air, leaving him and Ethan circling the same damn hallways over and over again.

"This doesn't make any sense," Blaze muttered under his breath, running a hand through his hair in agitation. "We've checked everywhere."

Ethan stood beside him, his brows furrowed in concern. "And calling security didn't work. Their phones were turned off."

Blaze nodded, but something about this whole situation felt... off. Every time they thought they were getting closer, something would pull them back, redirecting them down another corridor or leading them to a dead end. It was as if some unseen force was messing with them, keeping them from finding her.

And it wasn't just his mother. Everything had been going wrong lately. Ever since Elijah ran off. Running off when he should be by their side. They could have talked it out. Blaze's possessiveness flared at the thought, a sharp pang of annoyance mixed with something deeper, something almost desperate.

Elijah belonged with them. By their side, where they could keep him safe, where they could remind him just how much he meant to them. But lately, it was like he was slipping through their fingers, and Blaze hated that feeling more than anything.

"Let's try the main hall again," Ethan suggested, breaking through Blaze's spiraling thoughts.

"Fine," Blaze grumbled, though he wasn't hopeful. They'd already checked there twice, but what else could they do?

They made their way through the bustling crowds, dodging groups of chattering parents and students. As they walked, Blaze couldn't shake the sensation that something was shifting around them. The air felt different, lighter somehow. The oppressive weight that had been bearing down on them all day seemed to lift, allowing him to breathe a little easier.

He exchanged a glance with Ethan, who looked equally perplexed.

"Do you feel that?" Ethan asked, his eyes scanning their surroundings.

"Yeah," Blaze replied slowly. "It's like... whatever was messing with us just stopped."

Ethan nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Maybe our luck's finally turning around."

Blaze smirked, feeling a spark of his usual confidence returning. "About damn time."

They quickened their pace, hope igniting in their chests as they headed toward the main hall once more. And this time, Blaze had a feeling things would be different. This time, they would find his mother, and maybe, just maybe, they could set everything else right too.

Including whatever was going on with Elijah.

Blaze's eyes narrowed with determination. He wasn't about to let anything—or anyone—keep them from what was theirs. Not some mysterious force, not misunderstandings, nothing.
