Elijah couldn't help but feel a small sense of triumph as he walked out of the café with a smile on his face. He had aced the interview, and starting next week, he'd be working there. The thought of earning his own money and finally being able to afford more than just coffee brought a bit of light into his otherwise turbulent life.
At least something was going right.
Days passed, and the day arrived for Elijah and Ethan to convene at Ethan's house for their project. Elijah approached the meeting with a blend of excitement and apprehension, eager to dive into their work but wary of meeting Ethan's parents. Ethan. Mostly everyone who had a relationship with this fucking body.
Upon entering Ethan's home, Elijah sensed an uncomfortable atmosphere that weighed on him. Ethan's parents greeted him, their smiles strained, and their eyes hard. Hmm. It was better than whatever he expected.
He expected something more like screaming. Some little cursing him out. Basic stuff. Still, he had to introduce himself. He was an introvert. Not an impolite monster!
"Hello, I'm Elijah," he introduced himself politely, extending a hand to Ethan's parents. Not that they don't know him, of course. Still, he was at their house. Elijah had never been there, not even the character.
Ethan's mother took his hand with a polite but stiff grip, her smile not reaching her eyes. "Hello, Elijah. It's... nice to see you again."
Ethan's father nodded, his expression neutral but guarded. "Yes, welcome."
Elijah could feel the tension in the air, a silent accusation hanging between them. They knew him—or rather, they knew the Elijah who had hurt their son. He forced a smile, trying to navigate the awkwardness.
'Well, add them to the list of people who can't stand me,' Elijah thought.
Elijah kept joking about everybody hating him, but it was taking a toll on him. He knew that technically he didn't do anything he was accused of—Elijah the character did. Still, everybody seemed to despise him.
"Thank you for having me," Elijah said, his voice steady despite his inner turmoil. He glanced at Ethan, who was watching the interaction with a mix of wariness and discomfort.
"Let's get started," Ethan said quickly, leading Elijah away from his parents and towards his room. The silence between them was thick, but Elijah was grateful to escape the scrutinizing gazes.
Once in Ethan's room, Elijah took a deep breath, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling. "Nice place," he remarked, looking around.
Ethan frowned and seemed lost in thought but didn't say anything. Why did he frown? He was just saying nice place, it was the polite thing to do. What the hell was going on?
They settled down to work, the project materials spread out between them. Elijah focused on the task at hand, trying to prove himself through his dedication and effort. But he couldn't ignore the undercurrent of tension.
