"Akira!" A small, pink haired girl came running towards him, her little triangle hair cones bouncing up and down. "Akiraaa!"

Akira frowned, burying his head in the short book he was reading. "What?" He tried to sound as un-emotional as possible.

"Someone's coming," Anya said quietly, although she was still very loud. Her green eyes shone brightly as she stared into his eyes.

Akira nodded, only half-listening, "Nice."

Anya pouted and leaned forward. "I know you're excited," she said slowly.

Akira's body tensed and he looked up from his book, glaring at her. "Stop reading my mind."

"You know I can't," Anya pointed out abruptly.

"Don't," Akira repeated stubbornly, his eyes making their way back to his book once again. He was five, sure, but as a kid... Well, his 'parents' forced him to do some adult stuff, how about we describe it that way?

Takahiro, the owner of the run-down orphanage hurried towards the door, in which someone had started banging on. "Be on your best behavior, right kids?"

Akira rolled his eyes, fingertips tightening on the book.

"This might be it," Anya tugged on the sleeve of Akira's blue jacket.

"Careful!" Akira hissed as a tall, blond haired man stepped into the dusty little space. "You know what that jacket-"

Anya was gone, trying to please the visitor. Akira could tell that she was reading his mind already from the way she was zoning out from the real world. He could also feel the eyes of the man scan over him, making he feel like the things that he'd tried so hard to cover up were showing. He shivered slightly, tugging his jacket closer to himself.

Out of the corner of his eye, Akira saw Anya tug the man towards the crossword puzzle that Takahiro had been working on earlier. Somehow, she started scribbling answers onto the sheet fast, which was unusual since she was the worst person at reading he possibly knew.

Reading his mind, huh, Akira thought with a frown.

"Woah," the man said suddenly, breaking the silence. Anya grinned at Akira before returning her gaze to the man again. "How old is she again?" He asked Takahiro.

"Six!" Anya chirped, which made Akira frown again. She was the same age as him, so why was she lying? Oh, how he wished he could read minds like her.

The man's eyebrows rose, "Hmm. I suppose I'll take her."

Akira sat up, shock spinning through his body. Take Anya? How was he supposed to protect her that way? "Wait-" He blurted, then slammed his mouth shut. How stupid was he? Talking to a shady stranger would definitely make him end up back when he...

"Not without him," Anya added, pointing to Akira, her face firm.

The man's eyes widened noticeably. "God, that's not part of my mi-" He coughed and Akira's eyes narrowed, wondering what he was about to say. "Is he your brother or something?" He asked instead.

Akira didn't answer, instead turning his head around so he wouldn't have to look at them. No way was anyone going to adopt him; he was used to that. But the fact that Anya was leaving made everything so much worse. She needed him and he knew it. He knew it well.

"Umm," Anya said.

No, Akira thought loudly, I'll be fine.

"No," Anya said and Akira went still, "but, I'm going with him."

Instinctively, Akira bolted to his feet, fists clenched, the book dropping to the ground with a thump. "Anya! You know that- how dangerous I am!" Too late he realized he'd said to much.

The man's face changed into confusion, before returning to the usual emotionless mask. Akira knew that expression too well. He turned to Takahiro, "I'll take both of them, please."

"Akira and Anya?" Takahiro nodded, looking down at them. "Sure."

Akira scowled, not bothering to return the smile Anya was beaming at him.
