"This is my stop," Lux said, looking up at a street sign that read Swan Lakes. He glanced sideways at Akira who was clutching at his right arm. The blood soaked through his white sleeved shirt and was dripping onto the cloth covering his chest.
"I'll be fine," Akira assured him. "I think I know where to go from here."
"Think?" Lux repeated skeptically. raising an eyebrow at his arm.
Akira nodded, grimacing as another wave of pain passed through him.
Lux sighed, "All right then. It was nice meeting you."
"You too," Akira said, watching the older boy start down the dark street. He glanced back once, to give him a sideways, cocky smile, before turning around and disappearing around the darkened corner.
He trembled in front of the door, not sure why and not wanting to find out. He reached out cautiously with a hand, his uninjured one, and rested it on the doorbell. For some reason, he didn't press down.
Was Kai right? Did they really care? Like... Like he did?
He stumbled back, his hand falling back to his side and brushing at his bleeding arm that had begun to trickle down his sides. He took another step back, then another, then another.
What was wrong with him?
"Dammit," Akira whispered. "Dammit... Dammit!"
Why can't he just...
He staggered back another step, his arm jolting in pain and he fought back a yelp, squeezing his eyes shut.
What if they're happier without me? Anya doesn't need someone to protect her, does she? They're a family already... without a psychopathic killer.
They don't want a criminal for a son or a brother.
"Dammit," Akira stumbled to the floor, clutching his arm in agony as blood trickled onto the ground, forming a small pool of red on the wooden floor. He fell to his knees, head buried into the floor as the pain got worse, screaming through his body as he tried to make the blood stop.
Get up. Get up. Go inside!
"I can't," he whispered, "I can't. They don't- I can't!"
Are you stupid? Go inside!
"They don't want me," Akira fought back tears as a wave of agony swept over him, crushing him into the floor. The blood was getting worse, he could feel it staining his pants and shoes, feeling much heavier than it should.
He ended up outside, the cool wind doing something to numb his pain.
"Why am I listening to Kai?" Akira whispered, tracing his finger through the puddles on the ground and staring at his reflection. The side of his face was splattered with dark, dry blood. Michael's blood, probably and his eyes were a dull blue, no longer clear as the cloudless sky he'd seen so often.
A soft, fluorescent beam of light slowly spread over Akira's back and onto the puddle he was blinking at. Startled, he turned, eyes twitching at the sudden light.
The man standing in the front of the apartment complex stood bathed in light, wearing a dark green suit and a white hat, looking like he hadn't slept in days.
Akira's mouth fell open and he felt something strangle him.
Loid...
Or more so, Dad.
