Akira flopped over the couch, his head buried in his book as an exasperated Loid tried to explain what verbs and nouns were to Anya.
Yor was busy unpacking her stuff in her room.
"Verbs describe an action," Loid said with a sigh. "Nouns are subjects in a sentence."
"Nouns describe actions!" Anya pumped her fist up and beamed while Loid smacked his forehead with the newspaper he was holding. He looked up at the ceiling like he was questioning his life choices.
I'll help you get in, Akira thought.
Anya cocked her head and smiled at him.
So you should study, Akira added quickly. Or I won't help you.
Anya pouted and returned to drool over her paper.
Loid breathed out slowly, "Alright, Anya, let's try this again."
They gathered around the dinner table, Loid setting down a plate of chicken in front of them. Anya licked her lips and leaned forward.
"Thank you for the food," Akira murmured before picking up his chopsticks.
"So," Yor bit into a piece of pork and smiled. "Are you guys ready for the test?"
Anya glowered at her plate.
"Yeah," Akira said quickly.
Loid pulled a chair out from the table and sat down with a sigh. "Anya might be in a tough spot."
"No!" Anya protested loudly.
"Yes," Akira muttered helpfully.
Yor smilled a both of them, a happy smile that made Akira slightly uncomfortable. "I'm sure you guys can do it!"
"Thanks," Akira poked at his food.
Anya chomped down on her chicken leg and turned to look at him with a piece of meat hanging from the corner of her mouth. Akira slammed a napkin into her hand and looked away with a grunt.
"Girls," he muttered.
"Boys," Anya retorted.
Loid rubbed his head and watched them with a wistful expression on his face. It was so ghostly Akira was pretty sure he'd imagined it. Then there was Yor who was beaming down at them like they were the suns of the world. Then Anya who annoyed him and adored him and loved him.
Akira bit down hard on his lip to hide his smile.
Akira tapped his pencil against the sheet of paper before him, ignoring the other jittery students trying out for the school. He scribbled on the answers, trying to make his handwriting look pretty.
48b, he thought loudly, making sure Anya could hear him clearly. 73. 895.
Anya's head bobbed up and down from a couple seats in front of Akira, exchanging eye contact every so often. Akira set down his pencil as he finished the final question and turned to flance at Anya who nodded in response.
He sat and waited for the time to tick to zero, watching a green-haired boy next to him frowning at the paper, his pencil clutched tightly in his hand. A professor walked by him, scanned his paper, and walked away with an approving expression on his face.
Aced it, Akira thought smugly. He could feel Anya's energy from his spot in the room.
"Damn it," the green-haired boy whispered under his breath, his face pink with tension.
Akira looked around to make sure no one was looking before muttering, "62."
The green-haired boy looked up, shock rippling across his face before turning into a scowl. He scribbled the answer on his paper.
Akira leaned back in his seat, twirling his pencil between his fingers, watching the clock tick slowly. He made sure his paper was flipped so only the blank white side was visible. After what seemed like a while, the professor at the front of the room announced time was up and each row of students were called up to the front.
As Akira set his paper down, he saw Anya out of the corner of his eye waving him out the door. He smiled.
I'm coming.
A/N: Sorry this chapter was kinda short. I've been a little slow with motivation and all that... I'll try to write more! o((>ω< ))o
