"You don't see yet, do you?" A soft disembodied voice spoke, one James has never heard before.

He looked around, he couldn't see anything, it was all pitch black as far as the eye could see. He took a step, and his foot landed on what felt like sand. He looked down, he could see his foot as clear as day sunken in darkness.

"Why do you ignore these dreams? Do you think they are not real? Like they tell you nonsense? They speak truth to you, listen to them," the warm voice once again spoke.

He seemed to wake up from the confusion he felt every time he dreamed. The voice cleared the cloud that surrounded his mind. He could think clearly now.

"I can think, is this a dream?" James thought to himself.

"Yes," the voice spoke.

"You can hear me think?"

"Yes."

"Why am I here?"

"You know, you'll get there."

James stared at the darkness and decided to walk forward, "to find the truth?"

He kept walking through the hidden sand. He didn't mind the walk, though it proved useless to finding the answer to why he was here.

"I'm dreaming," he thought, "it serves a purpose though, but what?" He kept walking aimlessly.

"This dream is one of the few that been peaceful. The only other peaceful one was the one of that church in the woods. I remember it vividly? My Grandpa was there... he told me something... oh God. How could I forget! The words he spoke! They were important! But... it was just a dream..."

"Was it?" The voice spoke.

"No. He told me about the book, that it held answers about my lineage, about questions I might have, but I don't have the book anymore."

"You read enough."

"It's a book about the history of my family, about..." His mind became clouded again.

"He's trying to stop you from uncovering a secret. Don't let him," the voice spoke.

James focused on the voice, how calm and warm and homely it sounded. The clouds lifted, and he could think clearly again.

"The book... the first chapter... it was about a knight."

The darkness that surrounded him lifted. Revealing that he was standing on top of a sand dune in the middle of an endless ocean of rolling sand hills. The sky was a hazy purple, and a silhouette of someone riding on a camel was apparent on the horizon.

"Him..."

James squinted at the figure as he disappeared out of thin air. When James stopped squinting at the place he saw the figure, the sky turned to night and was lit up with a billion stars.

James looked down at the bottom of the dune. The person appeared there miraculously on the camel and stopped. The man was a knight with silver plates of armor straddling the white cloth that was wrapped around him. He didn't wear a helmet but had a red cross woven into the fabric he wore and when James tried to look at his face, it became blurred like he was looking through a window pane drenched in rain.

The knight dismounted on the large flat area below, looking forward. Across from the knight was the midnight creature that James had seen in his other dreams.

The knight unsheathed his sword from his back. It seemed to be made of a solid black glass, like obsidian, only more ridgid. The figure across from the knight pulled a long, black, shadowy blade from the abyss that made his body.
