(Bonus chapter! Surprise!)

A bright light is the first thing she sees.

Am I in heaven? She thinks to herself.

It isn't quite what she thought heaven would be. There's no bells ringing or angels walking around casually. Is she in hell? No, it feels to mediocre here to be hell.

"Are you awake Ms. Davis?"

Suddenly, her eyes snap open and she is aware that she is in fact not dead. She is in a hospital gown she doesn't remember putting on, and she's in a hospital room with desserts and get well soon cards on her nightstand.

She is so in shock, she doesn't take the time to ask the doctor where she is or what happened. The doctor just assumes she is listening and she nods when he says she has family that want to see her.

Kristy and Will walk in with flowers inside of a flower vase in their hand. Kristy herself looks like she is on the brink of tears when she sees Rebecca awake.

"What's happening? Where am I and why am I here?"

Kristy sits down a chair beside her as Will sits in the other chair somberly. "Rebecca, you lost a lot of blood. We really thought we lost you. It was miraculous they were able to save you and I don't know what I would have done with myself if I lost you. It was really a miracle—"

"Where's Dallas."

Kristy looks down at the floor, searching for words that don't hurt her heart. "Rebecca... after the attack on you and Dallas at the gas station, Ponyboy Curtis found you soon after and was able to call the police quickly enough. They got you and Dallas to the hospital but Dallas's wound was more fatal—"

"No." She refused to believe it.

"I am so sorry."

"He can't be. I won't believe it."

"It was just a little too late and there was nothing they could do—"

The tears had started to form, but they had yet to truly fall. For there are times when even when people are the most broken, they don't let the tears shed yet. For they are too encompassed in their pain to consider expressing it.

Kristy shifted towards the bed and quickly told ahold of her, holding Rebecca as tight as she could for a moment before just holding her, telling her that everything is going to be okay.

Rebecca simply sat there, not even being able to process that fact that Dallas is gone. Her taking the bullet was not enough, for she was saved instead of him and it didn't matter.

She will never see him, never touch him, never talk to him every again and she can't even process it.

There is something so different about experiencing death as a young woman. With Meghan, Rebecca was young and naive and could not fully understand it. But now, she feels a multitude of feelings being pressed onto her.

For life doesn't seem to matter if she is there, but he is not there with her.

So now she sits in the hospital bed, with Kristy holding her and Will rushing over to squeeze her hand. She sits there, not wanting to believe that she will never look into his eyes ever again.

His dark, but discreetly human eyes.
