"Moms love me!"

★————————————★

Well over a month had passed since she said goodbye to the Doctor last. In fact, it had been closer to a year. Life had busied fairly quickly, so she didn't find herself a spending her days daydreaming about aliens and time travel, instead focusing on the many responsibilities in her everyday life.

The bulk of her studies had picked up, spending more and more days huddled up in some corner of a library or her tiny apartment combing through dry research papers written by aging male scholars. The little time she had free, she spent with her Grandmother, helping the old woman with chores or solving a jigsaw puzzle.

She barely found time to talk with her parents, but they'd always been fine without her around, she was sure that hadn't changed. It didn't upset her, Penny had always prided herself on her independence, and it wasn't like they didn't love her. She'd check in on holidays and birthdays and that was enough for both sides.

Her normal life began to pick up steam once more with an e-mail from her professor, inviting her to tag along to some professional event. The learned woman was often introducing her students to opportunities like these, always in the name of furthering their studies. In truth, Penny was fairly certain the woman just liked to show off. Her hold on the scientific community was strong, earning her invites to many such events, and if she liked your work well enough, you'd be the first to know of them.

Apparently Penny's work had fit the bill, judging by the e-mail. She'd be crazy to turn such an offer down.

Black tie was not Penny's style, she missed her colorful pinks and baby blues, even if it was only for one night. Still, she'd chosen a black dress that suited her style as close as possible, with sheer, loose sleeves and a short-ish cut and high collar.

She stuck close by Professor Gilliam, watching as people flocked to the scientific mind for opinions on the night's demonstration. Speaking of which, Penny wasn't quite sure of what it was, she knew it had been talked about on the news but the whole thing was kept rather vague. Normally she would have done much more research on an events such as this one, but the busyness of her life had caught up to her.

As she pleasantly smiling at all the big names milling about the floor of the high-rise in which the event took place, Penny eyed the room's centerpiece, the giant metal chamber assembled in the room's center. It certainty had something to do with the night's main event. As her eyes scanned the silver machine, a familiar face caught her eye.

Excusing herself from Professor Gilliam's side, she weaved her way across the room until she was close enough to confirm; it really was him. "Doctor!"

Whipping his head around at the call of his name, a wide grin spread across his face in recognition of who had spoken. "Penelope Brookes!" His arms opened wide, and she didn't hesitate to jump into the hug.
