"Do you already know of us, little robin? Hmm, perhaps we will get to formally meet each other sooner than I hoped."
——————————————————————————-"Who wants to go first?" Jason called out enthusiastically, but the cats seemed in no hurry to volunteer. It appeared Jason would need to select the first contestant himself.
"Well, if you guys are gonna be shy, then how about you, big guy!" Jason pointed to the large grey cat. The grey cat casually strolled towards Janeice, surprisingly graceful in its movements despite its large size.
Observing the grey cat, Janeice couldn't help but be intrigued. He had an overgrowth of fur over his eyes that didn't seem to hinder his movements at all. He radiated relaxed energy, and yet, Janeice felt like there was more to it than that. She couldn't quite get a good read on him, but she could tell that he was clearly a people, or cat, watcher, much like herself.
'I wonder what he's thinking about.'
Jason cleared his throat and began reading the list of names, "Okay, big fella, here are your options:
1. Silver (fox)
2. Mystery
3. Greyhound
4. Slenderman
5. Cheshire
6. Mr. Grey
7. Ash
8. Soot
9. HeatherWhat's your choice, buddy?"
The grey cat emitted an unusual noise, something like a raspy cough. It kinda sounded like laughter, if a cat could laugh. One could say he seemed amused by the names. Janeice couldn't decipher whether this was a good or bad thing.
The grey cat sauntered forward and placed his broad paws decisively on the name "Cheshire." Huh, interesting choice. It seems this cat has quite the playful streak. Perhaps he wasn't as stoic as she initially thought?
'Janeice, what are you talking about? How would he even know who Cheshire is? Or what the word means??'
'Honestly I shouldn't be surprised. For whatever reason, these cats seem to have a level of understanding beyond what's normal for the species. I wonder, could this be the result of some sort of root work?'
With that thought in mind, Janeice decided to conduct an experiment. She slowly extended her index finger toward Cheshire's nose. She kept her movements slow and methodical to avoid startling him. To her surprise, he didn't flinch.
Janeice let her finger hover in front of his nose, Cheshire tilted his head inquisitively, he made no move to leave, and he didn't seem bothered, so Janeice took that as an excuse to keep going. She decided to go for it and gently booped his nose, drawing her finger back swiftly afterward, ready to evade a potential swipe.
Cheshire showed no reaction. Well, not really. He just looked kind of stiff. Janeice decided to test her luck once more and moved to boop his nose again, a little faster this time.
Cheshire reacted in a way that she wasn't expecting, making an attempt at a playful bite. Janeice giggled and withdrew her hand just in time. The two engaged in a back-and-forth of booping and dodging, she would boop his snoot then draw her finger back just barely quick enough to dodge his bites.
He was, once again, proven to be quick for such a big fella! He'd bite, swipe, and pounce towards her fingers with lightning speed. Thankfully she was just a little faster. What a nice surprise to find that Cheshire is far more playful than what she first assumed.
'Hmm, he seems to be just as playful as any other cat I've seen. I'm prolly just trippin.'
Janeice jolted a bit when hearing Jason chuckle. "I'm sorry to interrupt your fun, but we have more cats to name, guys."
