"Hey honey, how was school?" Indigo asked Sage as she got the roast from the oven."School was crazy, the back-to-school dance is coming up and everyone is fighting over the theme. Natalie and I are only focused on her birthday party now but I really want to help with the dance. What should I do mom?"
"I mean, you could do both." She handed a plate to Sage.
"Thanks, mom, this looks amazing." She grabbed the gravy and poured it over her mashed potatoes. "So, mom, did anything exciting happen today?"
"Not much really." She said through mouthfuls. "Oh, I went for coffee with Kai today, he's back in town and he wants to see you. When do you want to see him?"
So that explains why she was at the coffee shop today. Sage, your mom is not a monster. Sage thought to herself.
Sage rushed to her room after dinner, she sat on her bed reading a book. It was a gift from her dad, she hasn't seen him in ten years but every year on her birthday he would send her a novel. It was the only thing left of him. Her mom never spoke about him, and she just moved on, but Sage could not. It was not like she even remembered him but she always wondered if he would come back and make her mom happy again. Sage placed the book on her nightstand and went up to her desk. She grabbed a paper from her bag and took a pen and started writing a letter to her dad when she heard her door crack a bit.
"Just come in mom."
"What are you writing there?"
"Just a letter to dad. Can you post it to him?"
Indigo tugged at the strands of hair on her sweater, "sure honey, I'll do it in the morning." She paused. "Look, I wanted to actually talk to you."
"About what?" Sage continued to scribble on the page in front of her.
"I got a new job offer."
"That's amazing mom!" Sage stopped writing and faced her mother. "When do you start?"
"That's the thing I wanted to discuss with you. You know where Kai lives right?"
"Yes, he lives in London, why?"
"Well the job is in London, and we will need to relocate"
"But mom, all my friends are here and I just started liking this school. We can't move. Please mom."
"I know that its probably not something you want to hear but I think it would be good for us, we could tour England together and you'd make a lot of friends." Indigo tried explaining.
"Yeah, but Natalie is here, in Chicago. How will I get to see her."
"Honey, I wasn't going to give you this til your birthday but I think you should have it now." Indigo reached under Sage's bed and grabbed a box that was covered in wrapping paper and handed it to her. "Open it."
Sage ripped the paper off to expose her new laptop. "You got me a laptop?"
"Open the box." Indigo instructed.
Inside the box was a brand new phone. "You got me a phone too?" Indigo nodded. "Thank you mom."
"So you can FaceTime Natalie whenever you feel like you miss her." Indigo smiled. "So, what do you say? Wanna relocate with me?"
"Can I think about it please."
