Regenia took a deep breath as she sat down to feed her daughter, thinking about everything unfolding around her. Berardo was on a mission, and it seemed he wouldn't stop until he was dead. She didn't understand his actions; most would have taken their losses and started anew, but Ardo wanted something that could never be his. Why? That was what she wanted to know. What was so important about this particular mafia that he had to have? Questions she knew only Berardo could answer, and she would make sure to ask him before she took his life.
"How did I know I would find you here with Mia Dolce Farfalle (my sweet butterfly)?" Giovanni Sr spoke as Genia looked up with a smile. Without a word, the man took a seat as he touched her knee. Regenia could tell something was on this mind as it always was. Lately, neither of them could have had a peaceful day. It was always something to do or a problem they had to handle. It was tiresome, but needed to be done.
"Nonno Gio, whatever it is, you can talk to me about it."
"I know I can, Tesoro, but this isn't something I need to talk about... it's you who needs to be talked to." Quickly, Regenia opened her mouth to speak, but Giovanni Sr placed a hand on her knee. "We do things differently in the mafia, and I know it may seem unfair to marry your little sister or Milana off, but when push comes to shove, we have to make the best decisions for our family. We need the Amato famiglia on our side 100%. We have Enzo, but without his Padre's okay, we have less than a hundred men backing us from his family. Enzo is a businessman. He never saw the need to have soldiers standing behind him in New York, and when he needed them, he called his family. Yes, he controlled his city with the help of his Padre, but the only way his Padre will give him the mafia he has to marry."
Regenia nodded because she understood that part. What she didn't understand was why he chose her sister. Enzo could have any woman he wanted, but he bluntly pointed out Isla. Genia questioned if he knew her beforehand. Or was it an attraction that drew him to her? In order for that to happen, he had to have met her before. Mafia codes were crazy, but she would stick by them after she had a talk with Enzo and Carter— especially Carter. The man was trouble and not in the way most would think. Carter was a player, and Regenia couldn't let him toy with Milana's heart. Whether he was in the relationship or out, one thing was for sure he wasn't going to fuck around.
"I understand. I'm worried about Enzo with my little sister. From what I know, he's a good but private man. I never heard of him doing women wrong. I want to understand why he asked for her—"
"That is something you must talk to him about, my dear... may I?" He asked, holding out his arms for his grandchild. Regenia nodded and quickly handed the small child over as Giovanni Sr patted her back. "Every day, I feel my mind slip a little more, but the one thing that keeps me sane is this—my famiglia; you, my grandchildren, great-grands, and Caterina. Yesterday, I found myself wandering the house looking for him. Mio figlio (my boy)... every time I forget, it hurts more when I return to reality."
