this is what love sounds like

Falling in love had never been on Sophie's agenda.

Falling in love at a ball, at one she was meant to spend with her friends, dancing and laughing through the night, had never been the plan. Repetitively seeing the man she 'fell in love with' over multiple occasion, and growing quite close to him with ever coming event had never been anticipated. Yet there she was, and there he stood, dressed in some fancy suit, each complementing his figure and demeanor..

Each event, Sophie and the boy, who went by the name, Keefe, would sneak out somewhere. Whether it was the gardens, the conservatory, or the kitchens, the two made do because it didn't matter as long as they were together. Both young adults had fallen in love with one another. How? Neither of them knew. What they did know was that the person who they refused to confess their love to was the person who they wanted to kiss at night, and the person who they wanted to spend the rest of their days with.

Sophie looked forward to every event she was invited to now, looking forward to see the blonde boy.

Today's event was no different, standing amid the crowd, her face flushed with blush and dress flowing freely around her frame, Sophie waited to see Keefe. As the diner progressed, the head of blonde was nowhere to be seen. Frowning into her cup of water, she excused herself from the gathering.

Exiting the lively ballroom, she walked the halls of the manor. Sophie truthfully had no idea where she was, she was not informed of the whereabouts of this celebrations, neither it's purpose nor host. All she knew was that she was in need to attend it.

The hallways were wide and tall, empty armor occasionally decorated the walls, it's metallic iron shining in the moonlight from the overhead windows. Portraits were observed, bouquets were admired, and the peacefulness of the dark was admired. Sophie could here virtually nothing but her steps for a good ten minutes of wandering before hearing a faint piano play in the distance.

Curious, her head perked up, following the noise to a secluded room, pushed to the end of the hall. Peeking into the room, she saw a figure playing the piano, his silhouette obscuring his face.

"Hello?" Sophie whispered, not wanting to shock the, assumed, guest. "You're playing is quite extraordinary."

The person at the piano did not jump, they did not react in the slightest. Instead, with a quick flick of their wrist, gestured Sophie closer. She scurried to the individual, seating herself on the now shared piano stool.

The figure faced her, "Hey, Foster, didn't expect you to find me here."

Without hesitation, Sophie's arms wrapped tightly around Keefe. A wheezed laugh echoed through the room. He murmured into her hair, "Missed me that much, huh?"

"Before you, I never knew I could find home in a person." Sophie responded.

Keefe pulled away, smirking "You met me only thrice before today, Foster."

"You've lost count. It's been more than twenty times."

Keefe leaned backed on his hands, head titled to the window in the room. "I guess it has."

The blonde girl follows his gaze, watching the moon flat among the trees. It's light wasn't strong, but enough to swallow the forest in a beautiful white glow. The silence in the room stilled Sophie's heart, her breathing shallow.

"Play me something." She asked suddenly. "I wasn't lying when I said you sounded wonderful."

Keefe looked down at the piano keys. "What do you want me to play?"

"I want you to play what it feels like to fall in love."

His eyes met her's. A unspoken connection passed between them and a slight smile twitched on his lips. "Whatever you wish."

Sophie laid her head back, staring out the window and watching once again as the moon hid among the trees. A light melody escaped the piano, the acoustics of the room bringing justice to the improvised piece. It started off light, Keefe's fingers merely skidding over notes, wrapping them together in a messily arranged symphony.

" A crush." Keefe whispered.

The piano's sound progressed. It became more matured, more louder. Then, it faded away. After another measure, it once again pounced. The notes were more put together, yet they were still fleeting. The melody had pauses, spots of confusion.

Keefe struck a soft chord, "Realization."

Sophie watched the blonde boy gracefully to the music, his eyes closed and now fully immersed. The music became slower, more thought through as the notes now sounded perfectly in harmony. The sound came in organized volumes, softer and louder when particular emotions needed to be expressed.

"Acceptance."

The melody became quicker. More dramatic and less concise. The notes came out in a repetitive manner, as if they had nowhere else to go. They were stuck, in the same loop of uncertainty. The chords were struck out of other, panicking and panicking until unmanageable.

The blonde girl's eyes traveled to the hands striking the keys of the piano. They were shaking, pressing yet another out-of-order, powerful chord. Her hands reached out and traced calming circles onto the skin of his arm.

The tune became faster.

Then it stopped completely.

Sophie paused the motion, her face tensed as she lifted to meet keefe's eye. She found the soothing blue already staring. She saw love in the stare, nothing but the emotion rampaged in his eyes.

Flustered, her pupils jerked away to the moon that had been cowering behind the trees. Now, she watched, as it rose higher, settling itself in the haven of stars where it truly belonged. The moon shone brighter now, looking happier in the way all inanimate objects do.

The blonde girl faced Keefe, newfound confidence found inside her. If the moon could find it's retreat among the stars, so could she. "The last section? What was that?"

Keefe's eyes boarded into her own, watching the assurance bloom. "Taking action."

Then, their lips were pressed flush against the other.

Breaking apart, Sophie giggled, unsettled on how to comprehend both the emotions storming within her as well as the kiss shared between them. She instead looked up, watching Keefe with wide, excited eyes. She whispered, "You love me?"

"Goodness, Sophie." He laughed, pulling her into a hug. "I'll put it this way: if love was a star, I'd gift you the entire galaxy.
