My dad was my absolute hero. I remember him teaching me so much about dragons, from the time I could walk. All the times he would make me go out to check Tairn's scales with him, or Tairn blowing steam in my face as I got my dad's questions wrong on purpose. My mom called me his mini me. I have his dark brown hair, ice blue eyes, and olive complexion. Everyone says I have his smile as well. He was determined that I would be a rider some day, and I made it my mission to be just as good as he was.
I always knew the Sorrengail family because Brennan was stationed with my dad. I was always close to Violet and Mira when they would visit Brennan. I remember my dad and Brennan showing me how to throw daggers in the backyard right before their fleet left for the last time.
I remember begging him not to leave that night. It was the night of my 14th birthday. Little did I know that was the last time I'd see my dad. His knowledge would live on though, because I found a letter that my dad wrote to me that night. I found it in my mom's dresser drawer as I was cleaning her stuff to be burned. She killed herself a month before my due to the parapet.
There in my father's hand writing was the truth about the world beyond the wards. It was strapped to a journal he wrote to me. My mom held onto this until she ended her own life, just for me to find. I hid it away in my satchel and kept it hidden from General Sorrengail since she took me in after my mother's passing.
From the time my dad died I was constantly with General Sorrengail and her daughters. The General took a liking to me, and that is why I was trained by some of the best riders in Navarre. Mira was my first teacher after my dad. I became highly skilled with any weapon that was handed to me. I was strong, cunning, and deadly from the time I was 16. I never lost in hand to hand combat, was almost the fastest record time up the gauntlet, and did flips on the parapet.
What would my dad think if he saw me here now? Would he be proud? I know everything, but yet I still want to be a rider. Maybe then I could change what is actually happening.
