Ridoc is heaving beside a tree that's next to us and I am trying to keep positive thoughts in my head. Rhiannon has a sword strapped to her back and she is bouncing and stretching.
"Remember to listen here. If a dragon has already selected you they'll be calling. So pay attention to not just your surroundings but your feelings and go with them. And if your feelings are telling you to go in the other direction, listen to that too."
"Which one are you going for?"
I know the question was directed at Violet and I.
"I don't know."
I shake my head, because I haven't gotten any 'feelings' towards these dragons either.
"You memorized the cards right? So you know what's out there.
"Yes, I just don't feel connected to any of them."
"Agreed."
I say after Violet.
"Dain tried talking into a brown."
"Dain lost his vote when he tried talking you into leaving."
"That's true."
I say after Rhiannon.
"Bodhi said I should go with a green, but I'm really just not there."
"Bodhi get's a vote."
Rhiannon says with a smile. Violet nods as well.
"What about you?"
Violet asks.
"I'm thinking about that green, the one closest to me when they all got up close and personal with you."
"Well it didn't eat you, so that's a promising start."
I chuckle at Violet's answer.
"I think so too."
Rhiannon jokes.
"If you go in groups you are more likely to be incinerated than bonded. The scribes have run the statistics. You're better off on your own."
The professor states.
"And what if we're not chosen by dinner?"
Another cadet asks.
"If you're not chosen by nightfall there's a problem. You'll be brought out by a professor or senior leadership, so don't give up and think we've forgotten about you. Remember to spread out and use every foot of this valley to your advantage. It's nine which means they should be flying in any minute now. The only other words I have for you are good luck."
The professor answers. Then he leaves after taking a good luck at all of us. It's time.
"Be careful."
Rhiannon says as she hugs both of us.
"You to."
Violet says back. Then Ridoc embraces us.
"Don't die."
As we all begin to separate I bump knuckles with Violet.
"I'm not going that far from you, so don't think I won't help if you need it."
She nods and we all begin walking.
Two hours later:
With all the dragons I have seen, nothing sticks out to me. I huff as I see Violet climbing a tree in the distance. There has been a mixture of dragons picking up their riders and puffs of smoke everywhere. The general will be pissed if I don't bond. I hear footsteps and hide behind a tree. I see Jack, Oren, and Tynan. As I meet Violet's gaze in the distance, I motion for her to hide. She follows my instruction.
