We land in Montserrat and I easily dismount off Rebel's back and stretch. I almost feel refreshed that I got to fly six hours, but Violet looks like she's taken a beating. Nadine exclaims that she feels like she's dying and I look to Rebel.
'Should I feel bad?'
'No little one, it's understandable that the silver one is aching, but that one I don't understand her reasoning.'
I smile and nod as his dark blue eyes meet mine.
'Don't get into any trouble Rebel.'
I pull my flight jacket off and toss it into my back. I press my hand to Rebel's foreleg as I watch Devera and Dain greet the outpost commander.
'I believe I should be the one telling you that little one.'
"Welcome Cadets! I'm sure you'd all like to get settled into something a little more appropriate for the climate, then we'll show you around Montserrat."
I hear Violet and Rhiannon murmur to each other for a second. I'm not sure how I end up being the only one with a single room. I take a quick shower in the bathing chamber and notice a note poking out of the bottom of my pack. I pull it and notice Bodhi's handwriting.
'Talon,
Please don't do anything stupid while you are on the front. Rebel will keep you safe I know, but I had a weird feeling about this trip and decided to sneak you a note. If anything happens, get back to me as fast as you can. Keep your eyes and ears open.
I love you beautiful. - B.'
I smile and tuck the note back in my pack. I step out and see Dain banging on doors ordering us to get a move on. I huff as everyone meets me in the hall. We are given a tour of the outpost and I feel like something is off with Violet and Rhiannon. We enter the courtyard and the commander explains the purpose of this outpost.
I hear Dain and Violet whispering behind me and I huff slightly. This trip is not my first to an outpost. I am sadly bored by all of this. The roar of a dragon pulls me from my trance.
"That should be one of our patrols returning now. So we'll get you riders fed and off to bed. Then we'll work on who you'll be shadowing while you're here."
I adjust the dragon scale armor that is tied around my abdomen.
"Will we get to participate in any active scenarios?"
Heaton asks.
"Absolutely not!"
Devera snaps.
"If you see combat then I failed as this being the safest place to send you. But you get bonus points for enthusiasm. Let me guess, third year?"
Heaton nods and I sigh rolling my neck.
"Don't think I don't know your reputation either Cadet Highbrooke."
I nod and he turns to face the three distant figures in rider black.
"There they are now. Why don't you three come and meet...."
"Violet?"
My head snaps from the commander to Myra. My mouth drops and I see Violet and Myra run for each other. I change my expression from a surprise to admiration. As Myra holds Violet, her gaze meets mine and her grateful smile melts me. She looks Violet over and asks Violet if she's alright.
I turn to Dain and his eyes are observing the same thing I am.
"Look at you, you didn't die!"
"I didn't die, you aren't an only child!"
