"Hey, Sam, who do you think you are? Why the hell are you ignoring my messages?" Prajakta yelled at me and i immediately removed my earphones, turning my attention to her.
"I told you to return my earpods on the bus, but you've been ignoring my messages. I messaged you thirty times, just check it already!" she barked, pointing at my phone.
First of all, I hadn't borrowed her earpods, she asked me to keep them safe since she always loses them. Secondly, she asked me to hand them to her at the destination, not on the bus.
"Yeah, I just replied that I wasn't on my phone, and it's only been five minutes," I responded, recalling the time when she asked me to keep them.
"And I clearly remember, you asked me to give them to you at the destination, not on the bus."
"Well, I want them now. If you've kept them so safe, then return them to me now," she said in a challenging tone making sound like my fault it as I searched for my bag.
Evyaan understood the urgency and immediately handed it to me. I rummaged through it, feeling the weight of everyone's eyes on me, only to realise with a sinking feeling that I had packed the Earpods in my luggage.
"No, it's not in my bag. I have them in my luggage, I'm sure," I said, stumbling over my words. The pressure of the situation was suffocating.
"You lost them, didn't you?" she growled again, and at that moment, the bus started moving, sending a jolt through my already frazzled nerves. I felt my breath hitch when I nearly lost my balance, but Evyaan steadied me, holding my back and arm with his hands while Prajakta found support on his shoulder grabbing it tightly.
"Are you okay?" Evyaan's voice carried a mix of concern and anger as he looked at me.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Prajakta interjected quickly, flashing him a smile.
"Good. I was asking you, Samayara, are you hurt?" He turned to me, his tone now completely laced with anger.
"No, I'm fine," I reassured him and For the first time, I saw Prajakta embarrassed as she stepped away. She's the type who always thrives on the confidence she gets, by stepping on other people but it doesn't seem to work before Evyaan. As much as the whole school doesn't like to admit it, there's an unspoken rule about the Jadejas: don't get on their bad side. I guess Prajakta is trying to follow that too.
"You better sit down first," Evyaan pulled me back into my seat taking my bag. I wanted the situation to dissolve, so I offered Prajakta my earphones.
"You can use mine until we reach the destination," I offered, but she withdrew her hand.
"I don't like using these, Sam, it's not that hard. Just admit you lost them. No need to drag it like this," she threatened me to Admit the mistake I didn't even commit glaring at me. Evyaan intervened once again, retrieving his bag while stowing mine and offering Prajakta a solution.
"Here you go, these are my AirPods, it might be the same as yours or better" he said calmly, though the words carried a order, which was clear that he wants her gone too, handing them to her he sat down.
"Evyaan, you—" I began, trying to stop him but the moment I looked at him, his expression deepened with genuine anger, making me speechless.
"If Samayara is saying she has them in her luggage, then believe her. If she proves you wrong, will you hold yourself accountable?" He addressed Prajakta, his tone firm.
"That could be possible, but..." she stuttered, her anger evident as her temple veins bulged.
"Evyaan, will it not be better if you don't meddle in this situation? It's not your matter, anyway. Let Samayara handle the mess she made," Laksh suggested, adding fuel to the fire.
"If she's involved in a situation, I'm equally involved too," Evyaan asserted but then got a little conscious before regaining his composure.
"I'm the vice prime minister of the council, and I can totally get involved in any matter that's disturbing the discipline," he declared, effectively diffusing the situation as everyone around us got intimidated and lost interest.
"If you're done, you should get seated," he directed his gaze at Prajakta, who promptly left muttering and shaking her head in disappointment. As the tension dissipated, Evyaan turned his attention to me.
"Are you really fine, Samayara? You need water," he offered, handing me a bottle, and I simply nodded, feeling grateful for his concern.
"I could see you were really freaked out," he remarked, and I acknowledged his observation before stowing the bottle in his bag. He asked me to explain the situation, which I did but skipping the unpleasant details. His expressions soon mirrored my frustration.
"So, you mean she herself handed them to you, and the way she was talking made it sound like you borrowed them and lost them," he summarized, his eyebrows furrowing in empathy. I couldn't help but laugh at his earnestness.
"You laugh at pretty questionable things," he observed, his brows furrowing again, and I couldn't contain my amusement.
"No, it's just adorable seeing you this mad," I admitted, laughing once more.
"You think I'm adorable when I'm mad?" he inquired genuinely, and I realized the slip of my tongue.
"I didn't mean it like—"
