We ventured deep into the forest, diligently following the route Vedika di had sent us.

The path was treacherous—we lost our way more than ten times before finally stumbling upon the right trail.

What surprised me most was how uncharacteristically distracted Evyaan seemed. Whatever had happened clearly left a deep scar on him.

Determined to be supportive, I pushed my own anxiety aside and took the lead. Taking a deep breath, I glanced at his digital watch once more.

"I think we're on the right track now," I said, trying to break the silence that had hung between us for the past two hours. He simply nodded—his response mechanical, distant.

"Evyaan," I said softly, turning to face him and searching his eyes. He deliberately avoided my gaze, and the distance between us felt tangible.
The concern in his eyes mirrored mine, yet his silence only deepened my worry.

"If you want, we can take a break," I offered gently, my voice laced with concern. I reached out, trying to meet his eyes again, but he turned away—his body tense and guarded.

It was painfully clear he was struggling to hold himself together. The effort to keep his emotions in check showed in every movement. My heart ached to see him like this—fractured beneath a stoic facade.

"Hm," he finally replied, almost absently, before going silent again.

I scanned our surroundings and spotted a large rock near the shoreline—a suitable resting spot. We settled there. The view might have been what some would call heavenly or serene, but to us, it was anything but that.

The gentle sound of the river, the birds chirping, the soft rustle of the forest—it all felt cruelly peaceful. A mocking kind of calm.

Just then, Evyaan received another call from his sister. Since he couldn't bring himself to respond, I gently held his hand and brought his watch closer to my mouth.

"Di, can you please try again?" I asked, and she once again inquired about our surroundings. I answered as clearly and thoroughly as I could, focused despite the chaos within me.

"Okay, for now, just follow the map I'm sending you. We'll come get you as soon as possible," she assured us before ending the call. The worry in her voice was unmistakable.

My family was probably informed by now, and the thought of them panicking gnawed at me. I silently prayed they wouldn't be too overwhelmed.

But as I opened my eyes, a new wave of panic struck me—Evyaan was gone.

My heart pounded.

"Evyaan! Evyaan!" I called out, my voice shaking with fear and desperation. Please, no. Please don't let him have done anything rash.
